Quote: The most dodgy thing about this legislation is that the licensing office don't send a receipt when you send in an SORN so the first thing you know about a postal error is when you get fined.

NOT TRUE!!! You do receive a receipt through from the DVLA when you register a vehicle SORN...

I've had to do it three times on the box of bits in my attic that used to be a motorbike and I've never had a receipt. You send the SORN form to your local licensing office NOT the DVLA.

I bought a 40 year old Landrover for launching the boat. Ooooo it's a nice feeling to go into the post office and get one of those nice round discs free of charge from the nice lady behind the counter. They've even written 'historic vehicle' on the disc. I still find it amusing when I'm asked whether I'd like it for 6 or 12 months though!

I SORNed a car and have had a receipt 2 years running. As for the motorbike in bits - declare it scrapped, end of story.

Days of grace - most forces still give you the 14 days before issuing a fixed penalty- it's not law, but generally still applied.

Some local authorities are moving away from the 7 day notice system to an immediate (or within 24 hours) pick up as the 7 day notices are found to encourage arson in some cases. Complications arise when the car is registered to a disabled driver - for example, if the previous keeper was disabled but the new keeper does not report the fact he/she is the new keeper, then no clearance is given to uplift the car - a surprisingly common scam by those "in the know".

DVLA are bound by the same rules for uplifts of non taxed vehicles.

As for the offending obstructing cars - I found an American site which sells fairly unobtrusive non-damaging magnetic signs to affix to cars which upset you. With logos such as "I love porn" and things in similar vein.
As the site suggests, placed correctly at the rear of the car, the owner is unlikely to notice for a few days, but every car following will. I must try and recall the URL.

It doesnt get the car moved, but I'm sure there would be a certain satisfaction...

The answer to the sorn problem is to do what is apparently very common in the sink estates round here. You buy a cheap second hand car, preferably with a tax disc on it. Most sellers will still hand over the whole of the V5 which you keep and dont send in. Continue to use the car. No problems with gatso's, no problem with MOT's and forget SORN.

Just make sure you pay cash and give a false address if indeed you give an address.

According to the police, there are more than a million untaxed and untested cars in regular use. The problem is so extensive that when they use the new number plate recognition / tax checking cameras, they ignore the tax unpaid signals and simply look for those drivers with an arrest warrant outstanding.
