The new rules mean you are guilty if your car is on the road and not taxed if no Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) has been completed, yet currently in our road are 2 cars with tax discs that expired 2 months back. (Yes they have been reported, they may have no MOT or Insurance either, NO nothing has been done about them).

Now, being the honest upright citizen I am, I wish to renew my own Road Fund Licence but as yet do not have a reminder since the current one doesn't expire until 31/8, when I will not be here. Following the DVLA website instructions I obtained form V10 which I can apparently use if I have no reminder and set off to the nearest main Post Office documents and cheque in hand. After waiting in line for 30 minutes I'm told they cannot do it until 2 weeks beforehand as they don't have the tax discs yet, I have to go to a DVLA Office. OK, back on the web, find nearest DVLA Office (same tel no for ALL of them) and call them. ''Please listen to the following SEVEN options..... all other enquiries press 7'' I press 7 and the $%£***g thing just repeats the same seven options, so press #7 again and so on and so on and....

That's it, I tried, I've had it. I will renew the thing when I get back, when I get time, at MY convenience - and guess what, even if it will only be a few days overdue I BET I get caught and fined.

Rant over, I just wanted to confirm Bignick was right, I am CRABBY (sometimes).

Same here. We've reported vehicles in our area with out of date tax disks several times. All the authorities do is come along and place a sticker on them giving the onwer 14 days to pay. At least two of the owners just ripped off the notice and they still continue to have no tax. Why do the rest of us bother??

We had someone park 2 days running (I didn't catch him on day one) on our drive for 6 hours. The Police said it was a civil matter since he wasn't on the road and they couldn't do anything about it.

So next time I want to go to Bournemouth shopping I know how to get convenient FREE parking, just find the nearest private driveway and leave it there!

I suppose I could have clamped his car, if I had a clamp.

Why do the rest of us bother?

Because if you have a crash, even if its not your own fault like somebody driving into the back of you, the Old Bill will take you to the cleaners and the insurance companies will get very awkward.

Its one of those facts of live, whereby you can get into trouble even though others have caused the problem in the first place.

Lets just go sailing - no such problems there, eh?!

Re: Why do the rest of us bother?

There is a growing, and understandable, body of opinion that the law is only there to punish those that try to conform to society's rules, but make the occasional mistake. Unfortunately the police end up taking flak from the public for the policies of their political masters.

Nottinghamshire Police have launched a dramatic offensive against the gun and drug culture in certain areas of the city and the ground swell of public opinion behind the force has been incredible.

You couldn't clamp his car unless you had notices prominently displayed saying unauthorised parking risked clamping. If you do so he could sue you

There's only one answer - sell car, tell DVLA to stuff it somewhere useful - live on boat and use dory/dinghy instead. Yes, I know - nice dream !

I believe there is a grace period that as long as the car is taxed within a month of the expiry of your tax disc, no penalty is issued. ie a fews days late will not incur a penalty, but one month late will

Any contact with the DVLA is incredibly frustrating and a waste of time. I sometimes have to try and speak to a real person as part of my work- it's impossible.

The laws concerning SORN, and retention certificates for cherished numbers that are not currently in use, seem to present wonderful opportunities for the DVLA to snaffle these plates up for re-sale.

somebody used to keep reporting me for not having a tax disc, it got really annoying taking the sticky notices off the windscreen as they leave the screen all sticky, horrible when its raining. I never found out who it was?

Big notice glued to his windscreen saying "No Parking", or similar, and then offer to sell him a bucket of water to clean it off?

Wonder what happens if you tow/push his car out on to the road? Hopefully, he should pick up a ticket at least.

He can be arrested for criminal damage to a plant, if it dies....were there any fatalities under the wheels of the grass variety?

It's always been an offence to park ON the road with no tax disc. The change is that it is now an offence to park in your own garage without a tax disc unless you have filled in an SORN. The most dodgy thing about this legislation is that the licensing office don't send a receipt when you send in an SORN so the first thing you know about a postal error is when you get fined. There are two opportunities for a misdelivery, when they send the form and when you send it back - every year.

If someone parked on my drive I'd spraypaint PAEDOPHILE in big white letters down the passenger side of the car. Hopefully they wouldn't notice it before one of their neighbours saw it!

I did that once to someone who blocked my drive (with car stuck inside) for some hours and when PC Plod was too busy to attend. The returning car owner called the police and guess what? - they turned up for her and I got a ticking off for excessive use of a Pritt Stick!!

That would get Plod very agitated, I suggested the car on my drive was a fire risk as I could smell petrol so maybe I should call the Fire Brigade and have it moved - apparently that would have been an offence.

You need to get a friendly neighbour to park across your drive blocking them in as well. Perfectly legal and it gives them a taste of their own medicine.

Update! (still no RFL)

SWMBO has just returned from trying to find the local DVLA Office. Our car Satnav said the street exists but the property number doesn't, #s 23-25 inclusive are not listed though 22 and 26 are, and surprise surprise when she drove there she could find nothing that looked a likely candidate and anyway nowhere to park and look!

I surrender, surrender /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

We did that to one guy who said he was only going to be 10 minutes and refused to move. When he came back 40 minutes later and knocked on our door I said, ''sorry I'm having dinner, I'm only going to be 10 minutes.....''

This I believe supports my proposal that the road fund licence and the cost of third party insurance should be included in the tax on fuel so that the road user, be it large distances or large engines, pays.

I have two cars with two road fund licences and two insurance policies. Why I can only drive one at a time.
