RNLI and anchors

Freedom of speech ......

But 'Neeves' .... maybe you can enlighten as to the true purpose of the thread you started ?? It doesn't seem to follow the 'Practical Boat Owner' base ... doesn't seem to have any practical advantage or advise for boat owner ... ???

One of our august members was making assertions that were incorrect and on further research were found to have no validity. I was offering a correction. I could have summarised the incorrect assertions but chose not to.

The thread has been read by over 1,000 members, or 10 members 100 times, or even 100 members 10 times. it has produced 41 posts. Some people found it had merit. I think you need to ask them their motivations - summarise your findings and submit your findings to the Moderators.

Why are you reading the thread? - are you looking as part of your recuperation a role as a Moderator.

No-one running their engines here, no pollution, no unwelcome noise, no unnecessary finance, fresh crayfish off Breaksea Island, a sense of achievement having got there, a nice hill to offer free exercise, no swell or chop (if you listen to the weather forecast) and if the forecast looks questionable

but I suppose people would complain about the Black Swans.

Jonathan

I'm advised there are multiple 'Breaksea Islands', but having peeked at the rockeries and raw vegemite, I'll stab a guess at SW Tassie in the Gold Diggers Beach/Black Swan Island vicinity.

And speaking of 'Black Swan' events.... we'd better not, 'cos that could lead directly to a team of Bruces 'Reading Of The Rules' and a chorus of The Philosophers' Song....

Plenty of shelter up here, but I suppose people would complain about the Black Swans.

Daydream stick to your marina - leave wilderness for those who appreciate it.

Each to their own :). It takes all sorts.

So like I said about sailing up one muddy creek . What is the difference between the first 2 rocky coves? Nothing really , is there? You look at one rocky crag & it is just the same as the next. So what is the excitement in that?
What is wrong with a marina where one can meet others, exchange views with different people - bit like this forum- views that can differ from our own, but views from which we can all debate. But we do not have to tell others to " Get a life", just because we do not like communicating with one's fellow man, but prefer looking at rocky crags, or mud walls in creeks.

I'm ever so pleased there are folks like 'Daydream believer' about... lots of them... filling the marinas everywhere, all debating away at each other like there's no tomorrow!

That leaves the quiet near-deserted anchorages to quiet like-minded souls like me....

Similar anchorages, different boats, how exciting:rolleyes:
Actually very different anchorages as well as different boats. Much better than crammed together with a whole load of other white plastic blobs in an identikit marina. The only attraction of most marinas is the towns they are in but you can get to them by car, bus, plane etc. Whereas mine (Worbarrow Bay behind Mupe rocks) is only accessible from land by hardy cliff walkers.

But they all look the same really. Bit of river with a few trees ,or some rocks and a few crags. Now & then a nice beach- But you have to pump the b..y dinghy up & row there or get the outboard out & motor ( more stuff to lug about) Then put it all away when you leave.
How much easier to place a few fender, 3 mooring lines. park up & step ashore as & when you wish as many times as you want. Get a beer or a shower as & when you want. Chat to like minded yachties or locals. Go for a stroll without wondering if the dinghy will still be when you return. Much more civilised. I am usually SH but if I suggested anchoring to my family I would soon get short shrift.

Really pleased you don't like anchoring. Means fewer boats in places I like. In most cases would not want to go ashore anyway. Your definition of "civilised" is clearly different from mine. I can do all the things you desire either at home or 10 minutes drive to Poole Quay.

Don't you have staff for that sort of thing..?

Strewth! They'll let anyone in here these days....

Is it not a survey of anchoring habits that can then be summarised and published in Practical Sailor?

Do not anchor, so staff are not required.

It would be interesting to have a poll to see how many overnight stops people do actually anchor against marina berthing when actually cruising. (Rather than just keeping their boat on a mooring.) Then how the proportion works with owners who have a permanent mooring against those that have a permanent marina berth. I expect berth holders lean towards marina berthing & mooring holders lean towards anchoring.
I may be wrong of course. Marina berth holders may welcome the chance to anchor for a change- "look at me I am on anchor". ?. Some mooring holders may find marinas alien & are frightened away. That is probably the reasoning behind much of the anchor biased types. They cannot honestly think it is better- Can they? -Surely not
