rivet tool recommendations?

I have one of those little hand ones but they are not up to the task of setting larger Monel metal rivets. Lazy tongs or long arm type? Any experiences to share?

When I fitted mast steps (home-made) I borrowed a lazy tongs type to set 5mm Monel rivets. Mast was down and I had to put my weight on the thing to pop them.

We use the long arm ones,up a mast you can pull the rivet without pushing hard.hopefully not slip off like lazy tongs,or have to lean along distance away.Spiralux ,Ithink.

As Cindy says.. the lazy tongs riveters involve a lot of push against the workpiece... not so easy if you're up a mast...

Google faithfull long arm rivet

You will find the Faithfull Long Arm Rivet Gun for about £40. It does rivets up to 6.4mm and even catches the mandrels. Mine seems to be lasting and does not need much effort...


Edit.. Just seen that PuffTheMagicDragon also said a lot of effort was needed against the workpiece!

I had little luck with either type. I ended up using an airtool which was superb. If you have access to a compressor and it is practical for the job I wouldn't hestate to recommend an air tool.
If I had to choose between the hand tools I would go for the long arm type.

Pop over and borrow my lazy tongs if you wish. They set 6.4 monal rivets with ease.

Hire a battery powered electric rivet gun (Gesipa) from HSS Hire - quick and simple to use, worth the hire cost! We use them in our factory, are fine for SS/Monel rivets up to say 4.8mm dia

Hi, when I was looking for the same thing I found that the head-the bit that grips and pulls the rivet was the same on a long arm set as on a medium priced short arm set. Using my pet truism that an engineer is someone who can make for a shilling what anyone can buy for a quid I bought the short ones and slipped a bit of SS tube over each arm,secured with a 4mm nut and bolt. They are dismantled so they fit in the big toolbox and so I always have them avaiable. Usually to help other boaters who are in need of them! Before posters start on about quality,it was a consious decision based on occaisional use,not professional use. Hope this helps.
