I am about to make my first trip to this part of the world, never been before, which Marinas would you suggest please, just want a good nights sleep and some nice atmosphere

many thanks

Neptune or Haven marina Ipswich. Neptune is only a short walk from the town centre and has a number of reasonable eateries/pubs close to hand but has a night club close to the marina, nice views on a summer evening. Shotley is another but quieter option.

Depends how far up you want to go. No marinas in the Stour but several options in the Orwell (some already mentioned). Listing them starting from the Felixstowe end:

- Shotley with lock access (actually wher the Stour and Orwell meet), a pub nearby and a bar/restaurant on site. Very convenient for the sea but lacking in atmosphere IMHO
- Suffolk Yacht Harbour at Levington. Nice marina with bar/food available in the converted lightship. Not particularly close to anywhere....Levington is a mile or two away and has a pub (The Ship - used to do good food but not been for several years)
- Woolverstone MDL marina with bar/restaurant and lovely walk down to Pin Mill where you will find the delightful Butt and Oyster. Marina is in a lovely loaction and is probably the best of those mentioned so far
- Foxs juts the other side of the Orwell Bridge. On the outskirts of Ipswich so a bit of a hike in or a taxi. FMYC club as already mentioned and large chandlery/clothing store onsite
- Ipswich Haven and Neptune close to the town centre. We prefer the a Haven but a bit further to walk into town

Quite easy to spend a week or more pottering around. Also Titchmarsh and the Deben close by, which are also worth a visit

How long at 6knts does it take to get to the MDL from open sea please?

I would say less than an hour and a half....IIRC we get up to Ipswich in less than that time......and we mind our wash! :)

Woolverstone is on the river and there are commercial ships passing occasionally but they are not a problem. We have never been concerned about wash when mooring there but when lying in bed and you hear a ship coming it always seem to sound as though it is heading straight for you... :)
