Back in about 78, I did the Scottish series on a Rival 32, we did the feeder race from Bangor, the round Arran and all the inshores, she can not have been too slow because while we did not win anything we finished all the races.
I knew someone that had one and crossed Biscay and the Atlantic with no problems. My slowish V 34 would outsail and out point it though.I've read the message and other threads before about the R34 performance but here it's another pre-purchase question about the shallow keel version with 1.42m draft
What are the limitation of the shallow keel in bue waters?
Anyone has crossed the Biscay or done an ocean passage with the shallow keel version?
thanks
VancouverThanks for the feedback!
Does the "V" stand for Victoria?

Thank you very much for the links. I've actually just asked to join the FB group. If you use Facebook, search for “Rival Owners Association”. They are very active and will be able to address all your questions as a potential buyer. Also an owners association, very likely a similar membership as the FB group.

the deep keel version will point slightly higher but both versions are equally capable on long passages. In addition to the above references, have a look at Old Man Sailing – Sailing blog John Passmore sails an R32 (equivalent to a shallow keel in R34 terms) and the distances he has been covering are seriously impressive - he has also written a couple of books on the topic + podcasts (he is an ex Fleet Street journo) which are excellent narratives of his recent adventures https://www.amazon.co.uk/Old-Man-Sailing-dreams-lifetime/dp/B08TQ9KV48/ref=sr_1_1?crid=20D6TK5MUPPMR&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Uyo2hPDkUOgpVTdAN8dUtQ7LjNYUYG5haVV8rjA7z_fI1qyM_hJLYeDUYvyZQ_3bN9-6AiDdQKeVvPj4YFbyfvyOnWroH0z6jtlr6Z4hebAH97VFH03EIZw6PpR9rmov0X3m6RFe6kQlOsmtkbcjC_6ogptUtw3kgj3E0ddjsoOtMQGYpjsIpDTJGPPd2JkYEeaof4qAyU3Ah16-Q1366o2uDdS2x7fbBhWXVn2Mue0.lRaS8UPm1QOy7wlTI37cRB50ucrBXabRsgWKkDguR3k&dib_tag=se&keywords=old+man+sailing&qid=1716721374&sprefix=old+man+saling,aps,81&sr=8-1I've read the message and other threads before about the R34 performance but here it's another pre-purchase question about the shallow keel version with 1.42m draft
