I've just received my insurance renewal notice. The cost has gone up by 20% despite no claim having been made.

I'm in the process of getting alternative quotes and so far Haven Knox-Johnston look competative (same premium as I paid last year).
Does anyone have any experience of them? Also, are others experiencing similar price increases?

Par for the course these days!

Only experience of H.K.J., was as a third party claimant some years ago. Their insured admitted full liability but HKJ argued the toss with me over what they would pay for. All this after I had salvaged his yacht and stopped it wreaking more damage than it already had.

I have been with Haven for about 7 years.

I have found them pragmatic and helpful. They settled a very large claim for fire damage without quibbling.

They will do only single handed daylight sailing (but at no additional cost) and insist on three people for ocean passages (sensible from a safety perspective but limiting for cruising couples).

They covered an Atlantic Circuit in 1997/8 without any difficulty. However, they did get a bit greedy when I wanted to extend the crusiing range to the Azores for the summer of 2001. Curiously, it proved a lot cheaper to insure each leg separately, (UK - La Coruna; La Coruna - Horta; Horta Falmouth), than to cover the whole trip from the outset.

My experience of HKJ has been almost the opposite regarding cruising area limits, although not so far afield as Azores.

When still in North Wales we realised that we were limited to 12 miles offshore in mainland Britain and Europe (Brest to Elbe), which left us uncovered for our frequent trips to IOM and Ireland. Our policy was adjusted without charge. Last year we sailed to the Baltic and area cover was increased at no charge.

We have never claimed against them so I can't comment. We originally went with them because their premiums were far lower than any other at the time.

20% ? HA! Think yourself lucky...
I just got mine from Pantaenius and its gone up (drum roll please..) 223 % !!
The reason being that as my boat is over 20 years old she's more expensive to insure... despite the fact that she's been laid up ashore for the last 3 years.
Aparently 20 year old boats are more likely to sink when they are in the shed..

Go Figure... I shall be going somewhere elso obviously!

A shame really.

No shame, they have done you a favour! They have dumped me ...

I have switched to Nav Gen who seem to be making the right noises. I sincerely hope I never find out how good they are.

Chris.

Yep, Pants told me they are no longer taking on boats over 20 years old so they obviously wanted me off their books.

- I have a quote from them and I cant find anything relating to singlehanding in their documentation. As a devout solo sailer it's very important to me...! (I know they won't insure me for the Vendee, despite the name!)
