I agree with the traditional masthead rig. A babystay or cutter rig will help a lot.
However, in a fractional rig the jib normally attaches at the same height as the cap shrouds. Therefore any tension in the headstay can be directly resolved by same tension in the shrouds. In combination with properly tensioned backstay this will induce pre bend in the mast helped by the spreaders, in heavy weather tensioning the backstay further will give more mast bend. The pumping effect can/should be largely minimised by the aft lowers.
I fail to see however, why a jib-only should have more pumping than jib and deeply reefed main. I have noted some peculiar S-shapes in fractional and masthead rigged boats when heavily reefed though.
I always go for jib-headed only if it really blows up and sailing shorthanded, saves a lot of reefing effort, you get a better balanced boat and it's not even bad to windward in a real blow when you normally cannot keep your desired windangle anyway because of large waves.
