Dearest Bagginsses

VHF range - of course you're right. However, factor in the likelihood of someone else being out there (not exactly the middle of the North Atlantic is it) who could relay your call, and the odds on being beamed up increase somewhat.

I'd suspect that a ship is likely to be in range so is likely to be able to relay a Pan Pan .

FWIW I'd Pan Pan butr set off in the nearest comfotable direction on the basis the least stress the better. That direction would involve wind on or aft of the beam.

It is certainly a valid issue for skippery-types. Always has been.

How would you decide?

[ QUOTE ]
.....knowing about wind direction and speed, weather, type of boat, engine and so on....

.....take the shortest route to terra firma, based on ability to sail/motor the boat. eg wind direction, sea state etc.....

.....decide on where is the quickest port to get to bearing in mind.....

[/ QUOTE ]

Now we're getting somewhere....

How should you decide?

Assuming this didn't come out when the crew were asked about any existing medical conditions or drugs that were being taken....

Make best progress (speed and comfort) for the nearest CG Helecopter pad whilst trying 999 on mobile phone and Mayday (or DSC Alert) on VHF.

Give Aspirin and read Ships Medical Guide while waiting for a reply.

I would take the shortest route to terra firma

[/ QUOTE ] Based on wind direction and sea state, I would set out on the most comfortable route to terra firma. I wouldn't race hell for leather, because I don't think that shaving a couple of hours off your passage time will make a significant difference to the outcome.

Good question, though, because it reminds me I should check that I have aspirin on board, which is what you should take as soon as you suspect that you are having a coronary.

Start a new passage plan? Analyse last weather report, study tide direction/times and and plan fastest landfall?

For example even if Cork was slightly nearer, but the wind was blowing NE5-6 rising then that (Cork) would be a poor choice, instead putting the boat onto a broad reach and heading for (say) Swansea MAY be a better option.

The key is a NEW passage plan to find the nearest quickest landfall. This in itself will bring you closer to radio contact and possible helio evacuation.

OK silly example, not the sort of thing I would have said if I had had a chart in front of me. The example was bad, the principle of a new passage plan stands.

Note to self; stop trying to put posts on the forum when being interrupted with work! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If yer done yer passage plan correctly you shouldn't need to ask us!!

What was your PNR (Point of No Return).

If you had that, then check your position at the time ~ question answered?

Peter.
