Re: Beware The Stupid People

No, you flipped it upside down. Read your posts. You asked the amount of training I would expect before permitting a trip with my kids. I and others responded that regardless of training - there are other factors. Your lack of understanding, your inability to grasp these issues and your determination to force a predetermined result sadly shows resolute lack of judgement inspite of tidal wave of argument against you. The law allows of sorts of stupidity - yet you continue to insist that with some qualiifcations you will be able to announce yourself as undaft. But this will not happen, not ever. With a triple Yachtmaster in sail and power and a degree in neurosurgery - the Stupid People will still see people muttering about them with sideways glances. Worst of all - the stupid people try to start discussions about other people being stupid.

DARWIN AWARDS

This normal sorts out who can take children out to sea.

DARWIN RULES claim the ones that aren't up to it....

Re: judgement

your retrospective use of the thread as a survey is a somewhat sad reflection on the quality of both the question and the resulting thread - for which we must all take some blame.
However it is patently clear from that and tis thread that individuals feel reasonable in applying a double standard to the issue of taking out their own kids on a boat and entrusting them to others. I admit it - I do!
As touched on in this thread this is a normal function of parenthood.
Interestingly you doid not ask the question - 'how many of you were/are happy to take out other people, or their offspring, when you judge(d) you were in uncertain circumstances ie. outwith your experience to date? I for one feel comfortable taking on one new element or experience without considering it 'dangerous' but am wary of more - this is the essence of how we learn and applies to 'licenced' pursuits in the same way. Like many here I hold or have held a PPL, RAC MSA Comp licence, m/cycle as well as a boat licence but do not consider that they enable me to safely undertake all activity in all conditions with all machinery licenced.
The issue is ultimately one of judgement; do I consider that I will make the appropriate judgement calls when out on my boat with my family - obviously I do (although why I don't know!). When considering others to entrust with my offspring I apply the same judgement ahead of any pure call on qualifications or skills; the same was indicated by many in the thread. Obviously the more experience we have the more we would be able to 'assess' someones competence but the inference I took from your thread was 'if you didn't know better.....how would you judge/decide'.
Finally there are many people with a driving licence, andmuch experience, that I would not wish my children to travel in a car with and the issue is not one of mechanical competence at all.
Finally, and I apologise to any that think I am being repetive, I am of the view that the aquisition of a qualification without actual experiece can be counterproductive and lead to individuals trusting to thier paper skills rather than their (better) judgement - in this I think the RYA have also tried to balance the factors as much as they can.

Please continue to enjoy you boating, and let others do the same without turning every issue into a llife and death situation - there are enough of them in the real world adn when you meet them I will back experience over qualifications everytime.

There\'s been a whole day of this nonsense

Happy1, I think you got a fairly comprehensive set of answers first time around. I think this is a deliberate attempt at provocation.

Consequently, with pleasure I wield my autocratic axe and in doing so remind you that you don't need to personally try and tip MBC over 100,000 posts this week.
