I'm thinking about replacing my cooker - it's done good service, but the oven doesn't have a thermostat and takes ages to reach a useful temperature, making it less than useful. I'd also like some form of built-in ignition; messing around with a lighter can be a bit of a pain! However, the ignition system should be self-contained; I don't want to have to make another connection to the boat's electrical system.

The existing Neptune 2000 is a pretty good fit, and ideally I'd like a drop-in replacement. There is also a worktop built into the galley furniture that can slide out over the cooker - I don't usually use it, but would prefer to retain the possibility. Therefore, the fiddles and pan holders must not extend too high above the burners, as appears to be the case with some makes (Banbury????). The existing clearance is perhaps 2-3 inches above the burners.

Suggestions?

The Neptune 4500 is nearly a drop in replacement but the fiddle/gimbal structure is a little higher off the hob top. You can't simply reuse the previous f/g because its fastenings to the cooker body are also at a different level... annoying because the pivots are also a slightly different design so you have to replace the mountings for them too.

But if it otherwise suits, the new larger fast boiling ring is a real bonus, the grill lights all the way across first time, the oven thermostat actually seems to work at the gas mark you choose, the AA battery powered spark lighting works reliably and it has the standard safety features.

If you can do without the grille, the Techimpex that Force4 have would fit. Very pleased with my current one, although the last one I had did not take kindly to heavy use when on charter, but those i have seen on privately used boats have lasted well.

Interesting, but I'm afraid I do use a grill - crumpets are a major food group as far as I'm concerned! I presume, though that it has a larger oven?

Just had a look at Techimpex's web-site, and their Top4 cooker looks the business - but unfortunately, it's too wide to fit the space I have.

It looks like my best choice is the Neptune 4500. I've seen one, and it looks like it'll fit - I doubt anything else will be as good a fit. Unfortunately, the one I saw in my local chandlery didn't have built in ignition, but I'll check out the usual suspects online!

No, similar size oven but the overall height is of course less. Separate grills are mainly an English obsession and many European and US cookers have what is called a "broiler" - a built in burner at the top of the oven. I don't miss a grill which I use a lot at home because if you use it for cooking meat it is smelly and dirty so restrict foods to either oven cook or top burner. Problem though for toast and crumpets, although my current toaster over the big burner works tolerably well.

These are made by Leisure Cookers and are badged Aquafax or Bainbridge. I fitted one nearly 2 years ago and am very pleased with it. One tip is to wait until Black Friday and check out the bargains, I found Marine Superstore had the best price.

I fitted a Neptune 4500 a couple of years ago. A great stove except.... using the grill I was getting very high CO readings. The CO alarm kept going off even with loads of ventilation. Force 4 replaced it immediately but the new one was just the same. So I got a marine gas engineer involved who replaced the entire gas installation. He said it needed a bigger bore pipe as the stove needed higher pressure. He also changed the injector for a different size one. And said it shouldn't be used without doubling the fixed washboard vents. This was not an option, I only use those washboards to lock up the boat when not on board. The ones for sailing are solid watertight ones, rarely used at sea. The result: it still produces CO on the grill and I only use it with the companionway fully open, the portlight above the stove open, the main cabin hatch open and a through draft to the forecabin where the portlights are also open. Then I get a reasonable CO reading. Not great. This is only with the grill. The hob and oven are fine. So if you get one or have one do get a CO monitor as well. on the plus side the hob and oven are great and I like the electric ignition. I know of another owner who has had the same issue with this stove.

Thanks for the heads up - I've got a CO monitor.

Relatively new in the cooker market and has filled the "budget" spot previously occupied by Nelson Spinflo. Swedish company that has bought up makers of fridges, cool boxes, camping gear and so on. Not sure of the origin of the cookers but they look OK.

The one I've seen is dearer than the Neptune 4500, though in the same range. I'm somewhat constrained by the space available, so an additional choice is of interest.
