My berth is right next to the Fuel Pontoon at Chichester so I get to see everyone getting fuel. As usual on the fuel pontoon there are nice Red signs everywhere saying "Switch off your VHF, Switch off your Moblie and Switch off your engine" Now I am amazed at the number of people who get fuel while talking on their phone, they leave their VHF on and nobody runs their extractor fan (even when getting Petrol and LPG) And I did see one Yacht who sat their with his engine running!!
The Marina staff are usually very good and tell them to go away or switch their phone off, but it is the self service people who get away with it.
Why do people have no common sense?
Why can't people obey the rules?
And has there ever been a fire involving a mobile or VHF?

I think that all makes sense!!

I read somewhere that Shell has had 3 incidents at their fuel stations involving mobile phones. 1 person lost their troursers when the phone was in the pocket, another had damage to a car and a third I believe lost car and damaged a fuel pump.
Unfortunitely our notice board at work has had this info. removed so I can not confirm precise details.

What is interesting is that the petrol stations are hiding the aerials in their signs, is that not dangerous. Mind you I have been concerned at the growing number of garages blowing up each day, makes filling up my car very scary /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

It's not using the mobile that causes problems at petrol stations (if that was the case cars would be blowing up all down the M1!!!) - it's because people are struggling with phones, car keys and the nozzle. Often they drop the phone when it bounces the battery falls off and you get a little spark...

With petrol vapour in the air VHF PTT switches are not a good idea either.
