Renaming my boat

I am renaming my yacht, a Hustler 25.5, as i`ve promised the person I bought it from that he can use the name on his new boat. I am unsure of what to call her, but I have a few ideas and would like other peoples opinions on her new name. I have shortlisted a few names below.

Black Swan (This was the boats original name)

Brown eyed girl (My partner has brown eyes)

Genie (My partner is called Jean)

Big Slick (I love poker and this is a term for Ace King, a good hand to have)

Any suggestions from the info above may help. I know it`s supposed to be bad luck to change a boats name, but I have found some information on a de-naming ceremony (I know it`s only superstition, but you can`t be too careful)

The usual process is to look up all the options on the internet by googling. These look all well and good while tucked up at home on a January evening with a good malt.

However, the reality of persuading not only yourself, but entire near and dearest clan, to run widdershins around the boat stark naked under a full moon in February whilst a F9 blows snow up your chuffer soon trickles through to frontal lobes, and sanity prevails.

You then chuck a cupful of £2.99 wine over the side of the boat, and give out meagre cupfuls of the remainder to the marina staff, telling them this is part of the ceremony.

Having bribed Neptune and marina staff from telling tales, you simply rename the boat and sink next time out

Darren, we didn't bother with a re-naming ceremony cos the Gods had a word in my ear to ask me to change the name - she was called 'Up-Chuck'. I'll tell you a story...

We live aboard and my wife had to appear in Court as a witness. When her address was read out practically everyone in the Court - including the whole Bench - started laughing! Think positive - give your boat the sort of name she would be proud of.

Song was originally called brown skinned girl and got censored! Local boat is called "fingers up your nose" weird, better one is "dunfreezin".

I changed the name of my boat & had no problems.I changed the name because it was called It Skintus which was written large in Greek type script .

I thought it was only bad luck to rename a boat within the same ownership - i.e. if you have just bought it there is no problem. Will shortly be in same situation myself, so would be pleased to hear confirmation of the above!

If the previous owner has "taken" the name then rename it you must but otherwise it's a no no.


dont know why it just is.

could be because (bad) boats were often renamed to hide a murky past - to make finding a crew easier perhaps.

Around the time of Nelson all the ships captured from the French and Spanish were renamed and many went on to great glory.

I always thought the thing about renaming was due to the fact that with a wooden boat you had to remove a layer of wood to recarve the name therebye weakening the stern?

I renamed my old girl because of the same reason given above, ie the previous owner wanted to keep the name. It was Morgan le Fay and I didn't really want my boat named after an old witch, so I renamed her Mermaid's Kiss. In 4 years she has always looked after me so it can't be all bad.

The shipping company I work for took a ship on long term charter & happily accepted the name it came with. However we have a Japanese V/P in the UK office. He speaks excellent English & has over the years developed a very English sense of humour. He was in stitches when the ship came to us, as he told us that in Japanese the ships name was "Pubic Hair"!!! An exceedingly rapid name change was the order of the day, superstition or not!

How do you Rename a Boat?
Well in my case I just removed the old name and painted on the new one.
Didn't bother with a renaming ceremony, just sat back with a whisky and admired my work.
But then I'm not superstitious, spilt salt and black cats etc. don't bother me. Although I liked Brendons' suggestion of getting everyone to run around naked, you could probably seel tickets.
Seriously though, think how the new name will sound over the radio, make sure it's nice and clear with no chance of missunderstanding, some names have to be spelt out every time.

If you have to explain what "Big Slick" is, it's probably not a good choice, as everyone will think it's a dirty old oily boat.

Maersk Shipping ( Supply Boats that is ) seem to change the names of there boats quite frequntly. When they build a new clas they will take some of the names of the old ones. You cant get much more successful Mr Moeller - with apologies to our Danish readers if that is spelt incorrectly.
