Renaming maritime areas and features ;-)

But you need to share it with the French - so perhaps call it The Entente Cordial?
Or just translate it? The Sleeve (or if you prefer to keep the Channel part, use the Germanic "Sleeve Channel").
Kyle of Sleeve just to include your friends up north too?

The Kyle of Sleeve is the narrow sea area that is situated between the Celtic Sea and the Germanic Sea.

Google will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in its Google Maps app, the company has said, after US President Donald Trump ordered that the body of water be renamed in US government documents.

:giggle:
BBC report Is Google Maps changing Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America?

Pack your gear and stand by your bunks, Greenlanders....🤣
Just looked on google maps and it is still the Gulf of Mexico. They haven't yet renamed USA as North Mexico !

It hasn’t been done yet as the renaming has not gone through the various internal departments. Even when it does the change will only affect people within the US and I doubt many of them look at maps outside the US often anyway.
The rest of us will carry on as usual and see Gulf of Mexico.

The geographical isolation of many Americans does seem to make many of them startlingly ignorant of what goes on in the rest of the world, judging by some of the interviews or comments we see quoted. I suspect that one might end up with the same conclusion by examining several other large countries, even when allowing for the often limited sources available to some of their populations.
I’ll put that to the test. We are, to put it mildly, in the boondocks. There’s a sign outside our window that say…..

Well no one since post #58 yesterday - which also had perhaps a better suggestion :)

Naming marine features outside territorial waters is the remit of the IHO. It is an international body, with it's offices in Monaco. Trump can dictate what it's called by the USGS (the US naming authority), but the ROTW will pay no attention. Having known some of the people involved in US naming, I am doubtful about any such Trump imposed dictat having much effect.

You'll know this, no doubt... what's the difference in setting names between the UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names and IHO? Does one outrank the other, or do they have different areas of interest?
