Yes, I can see that.

On the other hand, 'boating lake' conjures up for me n image of a small number of people relaxedly pottering about pleasantly aimlessly, and so many boats on the Solent seem to on an urgent mission to be somewhere other than where they are!
Yes 'boating lake' seems inseparable from "Come in number xxx, your time is up". I used to live within walking distance of The Serpentine and its sailing dinghies...

In fact the USA has a far longer Gulf coastline than Mexico. A subject oddly close to us ATM, as in less than 100 metres. Most Americans seem to think it’s a joke, much like some of these other renamings. I’d like to rename Southampton Water ‘Oil Drum Creek’.

I think the Solent should be called "The Sound of Wight".

Although a little voice in me says it would be great to go Scottish and call it the "Kyle of Wight". 😁

Far longer? About a third longer - USA circa 1,500 miles, Mexico circa 1,100 miles.

And Mexico's will be longer once it gets back the bits of Mexico the USA nicked a while back.

Personally, I think it should be renamed the Gulf of Cuba, just to wind up our American cousins. 😁

Depends how you measure the coast. Florida is as crinkly as Scotland almost, plus many islands. You could, if American, extract another 1000 miles.

Mathematically all coastlines are ultimately infinite in length, as the measurement accuracy improves.
But as Little assisted says perhaps to avoid that issue naming it the Sound (or Kyle) of Cuba would be an equitable solution?

St Geoorges channel should be rhe straight of Wexford

The Irish sea could just as easily be the Welsh Sea

The north Atlantic could be the Balearic Ocean

Sound would be the more usual Scots term for the stretch of water separating an island from the mainland (or another island). Examples include The Sounds of Mull, Iona, Sleat, Luing, Harris, Barra, Jura etc. etc. etc. Kyle woudn't really be right as it comes from the Gaelic for narrows.
