I'm doing some much needed maintenance on my wooden tender. The benches are wood, and varnished. In places where the varnish was cracked and damaged, water got under the varnish, and the wood has gone black.

Is there a way to remove the black stains, aside from sanding?

Not in my experience. The blackening is rot spores anyway so if you semi-sand and try to make it look like a figuring effect then after a short time the varnish will lift again.

Sorry, elbow grease job again! Don't forget that rot erradication experts radically cut back a long way from ANY indication of rot to avoid further infection. However this is usually for structural enclosed timber in buildings so on dinghy thwarts you might get away with a cosmetic kob.
