I've decided to remove the antifoul from the bottom of my boat as she sits on the trailer and the maximum it's ever gonna be in the water will be 2 weeks.

I've just been speaking to the chap down at the boat yard and he told me roughly it's gonna be 1000 euros to do the job.

She's just over 6m's and granted there are a few coats..but he's only gonna get his labourer guy to do it manual...nothing fancy like shot blasting etc...

...seems mighty priccy to me...

...So...I've got a heat gun..I've heard you need to be careful but the heat helps a lot...or I could go the chemical route, anyone used the chemical stuff?

Anything I need to do once it's off, any treatments?

I'm not really looking forward to the job but I can buy lots of other things with a grand!

I ve come across a number of tips and tricks on the forum, most of which I tried. Now I assume people have suggested them as they worked in those cases. I can only assume that depends on what A/F you have, as I had little luck, except...
with a long handled decorators scraper.. BQ, Wickes Screwfix (sorry not local!). Took about half a day for 34ft, and wasnt really that tough a job.
I also used a LIDL type poer scraper.. you might want to be careful around any chines etc, but that was really easy.. came off like butter.

Sounds like you have the magic touch...You don't fancy having a go on mine do you :) I can keep you fueled up with Sarnies and tea :)

It's not the work that bothers me...it's the time it's gonna take..I don't fancy the ear ache if I spend too much time down at the boat.

Maybe I can use some of the money I save on Bribing SWMBO with a night out or something :)

I suppose it gets a bit tricky along the strakes?

Any ideas on the type of sandpaper I'll require if I need it?

I would think that in Greece the dayworker rate wouldn't be more than €10 per hour. That means 100 hours to strip your anrifoul off.
Sounds like too much to me.
Probably half the price here in Marmaris.
Cheers,
Chris

To be fair I didn't understand fully as my Greek is **** over the phone.. I think he was saying about having to lift it off the trailer to make it easier to work on...Definitely understood the 1000 euro's though

It's strange coz I've had other work carried out by him and it's always come in very reasonable.

I must admit he was only gonna get his laky to do it and I just don't think I'm overly comfortable with the lacky weilding a scrapper on my pride and joy.

I need an excuse to buy a new electric sander...I'm sure I'm gonna need it at some point :)

I have hard a/f and no sandpaper made any impression at all, though you see saily boats being sanded... guess its softer a/f.

If you are in and out of the water, anti foul will be a waste of time, best to scrub her as she comes out, remove the flakey bits of old stuff, I know she will not look pretty on the trailer but using a/f and not returning to the water and staying there is a crazy idea. Two weeks worth of growth will power wash off in no time.

Yep, that's why I'm removing it and keeping her with a gel coat bum, don't want to re-paint her.

If I get another knot or two out of her even better :) I mean There must be a few coats on...that's got to weigh a bit

Why bother scraping/removing it? Just keep using the boat - it'll come off eventually by itself, or at least minimise the amount of effort required to remove the last remaining bits.

Scraping isn't the most pleasant job to do on a boat, but €1000 seems a bit pricey to me. I had mine soda-blasted for less than £300.

Removing antifouling

I had my 32 footer anti fouling blasted for £400 , in Dover, a couple of years ago so 1000 euros is a lot on the high side.

Sandvik make a tungsten bladed scraper that is perfect for the job. expensive but perfect. Grind the edges round before starting to keep from gouging the gelcoat.

Work with the AF damp/wet to keep the stuff out of your lungs and wear a mark. Its also easier to clean up, doesn't blow away etc.

A days labour will do it.
