I have Manson Supreme anchor with 60m x 8mm chain which is 11 years old now. Can you recommend someone in Portsmouth/Southampton area who can help with regalvanising?
thanks

Is it very rusty over its entire length? I doubt it. In which case just cut off the few metres that are very bad. Otherwise Boat Gear Direct near Ipswich ( they supply mooring chain throughout the UK) is the retail part of EYE marine who are a big commercial mooring specialist and in my experience have the best prices and best service for new chain or chain/rope. Not really worthwhile trying to get re-galvinised in my experience.

Had mine done 5 years ish ago from a midlands company, about half price( including pick up and return )of buying new chain.live aboard in med for last 3 years anchor alot still good

Have you used Regalvanising chain ? Unfortunately, they do not offer this service anymore. I have read that properly regalvanised chain has better corrosion protection than the new one. Mine is "ok" but as we plan to move our boat to MED soon and we have some spare time now, I thought why not?

Rigmasters in Southampton are first class chain suppliers.
Unfortunately Wedge no longer have a specialist chain galvanizing line but many other companies will do it in a batch process. If well done the process offers worthwhile benefits and there should be minimal 'welded' links.

There was a recent thread on this, the chap was in a similar situation to yourself - try a search.

Despite a number of suggestions he was unable to get it done and gave up. It's sad when usable stuff has to be binned and replaced by something carted halfway across the globe.

.

Same here: tried to get mine regalvanised but gave up as by the time carriage was added both ways for regalvanising, quotes were almost identical to new chain delivered cost from Boat Gear Direct. Bought new, delivered quickly on a mini-pallet right under bows of boat ashore.

No it was not them. They are one of few that do it by rotation and spinning. I can't remember their name at the moment but I did get it from a posting on here years ago

A forumite, local to me in Scotland, manages a coating company that does galvanising. He organised it such that multiple boat owners chain at end of season was dropped off at the premises. When they had sufficient volume a date was set and the chain regalvanised and was subsequently collected by the owners. Apparently regalvanising chain is a lot of effort and the cleaning process before galvanising produces a lot of contaminates. Hence, the batch operation.

My point is, if you are struggling to find a galvaniser locally, perhaps one would be more interested if you could arrange such a scheme for end of season. Lots of time to plan, ask friends, colleagues, club members such that it would make a local galvaniser's time and effort worthwhile. Just an idea.

Find a suitable outdoor space, pressure wash the chain. Then wire brush it. Something on your electric drill makes the job easier.
Pressure wash again or steam clean even better.

Make sure it is dry. Lay it out on a disposable tarpaulin and then paint with Zingasolv. Couple of coats will buy you another 5 years.

Before you put it back make sure the chain locker drains properly.
If you can, install a "trivet" to keep the bitter end of the chain out of the bottom few inches of the locker.
On our boat this is where there is a puddle of water and the last few metres of chain sat in this and rusted quietly.
