Red Ensign

Alas Crusty 1 the red duster they flew then was the pre union version so not the one that you fly now. Things change. From your posts it seems that you are very concerned about what ensign others wear.....or is it just my imagination. (Cannot find a smiley for sad barsteward)

Red duster, is a red duster.......it's the senior flag, whether you choose to accept it or not......personally, I couldn't care less. Me? A sad bastid???Naaaaaa, just enjoying pulling the legs of blue flaggers /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Methinks you takes yourself a little too seriously....

Fair winds, and have good weekend /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you use a "Europen ensign" in portugese waters, please watch out, the local guardia or whatever they are called, stopped three UK boats in and around Faro, and fined them for having an incorrect ensign/flag whatever.
They may well have been just passing through or short of funds, but just be warned.
By the way, If I see a "european Ensign" with a union jack in the corner, I will give that boat a wide berth, what's wrong with the red duster? No sense of history? Its good enough for me and my boat, wherever.
Dont see many bues in the meddy, well I havent anyway.
You wont see any Spanish boats with these european flags either, the guardia take a very dim view of that!

Absolutely nothing wrong with the red duster, I think some folks just want to be different?

When I look at mine fluttering in the breeze, I confess to having just a small feeling of national pride, it kind of reminds me of who I am.........

Basic equipmet i Spaish boat I Spanish Flag. The list does not mentio an Anchour or compass. The Spaish buy the smallest availalbe and leave it tethered to the oat till it rots.(No woder they lost the Armarda),sorry dread snif)

I can understand you having a feeling of personal pride because you served ‘in the Royal’ but i can’t understand your need to ‘shout’ about it by flying a different flag to the rest of us. As you said in your post you served ie past tense. I have never understood why senior officials of the armed forces have the right and indeed exercise the right to retain their rank after retirement . You are correct that the blue ensign gives you no status or credibility.....but others seeing you fly it will believe you are deluded enough believe otherwise. After all...why fly it then? This is the kind of behaviour that has the rest of Europe (and the world probably) laughing at us. Do you really not think it a tad pompous?

What is it that eats people up about a blue ensign? I really don't get this. Either you don't care & don't wear one, or, if you want one, just join a club with a warrant & get one for yourself.

It's no big deal either way is it? There are plonkers under every flag - even on these fora too! But most people are sensible. Bad behaviour and abuse say more about the person doing/ saying it than the person it is targetted at.

Can I suggest we all just chill & be friends. OK, friends with different opinions, but that's what makes the world go round innit? By all means, tease, but keep a sense of proportion & don't let it get personal or offensive.

Well you would say that.........

Seeing as how you are a bluesy floozy! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My post seems to have gone off track but now it has I would like to ask all those Brits floating around what statement the think they are making by flying anything than the red ensign. I ask only that I can understand and not pre judge.....all this bollocks is making me see red!!

Personally I will sail my boat wherever I can without flying a flag at all. I am not into Jingoism. I am sure foreign harbour masters seeing a boat approaching with the red duster will only use it as an excuse to get the inflated tariff boards out for the UK market!

Probably more to do with the lump of plastic fantastic you are sailing, than anything else. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Having just read through this whole thread, I can see that British tradition really has been killed off by new labour in the last 11 years. At 70 years of age I cannot keep up with all this modern stuff and will continue to observe the customs I learned a long time ago.

I guess that as far as the members of the forum are concerned that makes me a pompous sod. So be it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Not at all!................

Well, not unless you are a pompous sod!??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I have only ever displayed a red ensign, but I do like to take it in at sunset. I have also always enjoyed the sudden signs of panic aboard warships and sail training vessels when they have invariably dipped theirs in reply, but rather late.

As an ex 60's hippy, I don't think 'pompous' would be quite the right description. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My boat is in Turkey with a Red Duster (of which I am very proud) and a Turkish Courtesy flag. It lies alongside a few other similarly flagged boats also close to a few Turkish registered boats.
However we, the aforementioned, appear to be out numbered by Stars and Stipes all registered in... wait for it...

Yes you all guessed it...

Delaware.

To the ex hippy, and the poor sod surrounded by sceptics!

Good on yer boys, wear the red with pride! I do.............

When I can remember where I left it! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I didn't shout old man, just took umbrage at a post that infered that I was of a certain character just because I wore a blue ensign. I don't shout about anything but choose to wear a blue duster. Why not? I am not responsible for what others think, only for myself! Strangely enough it doesn't make me pompus, just human exercising a choice.
I don't use my rate nowadays, I think that Leading Catering Accountant (Rtd) would be idiotic not pompus. I've never noticed being laughed at for having a blue ensign by the rest of Europe just some Brits who wish to judge others by their own misguided standards.
Each to his own.
I would't dream of critising you mode of dress so why critise others for making their choice.
Im an ex hippy and an ex matelot. Still a human being though last time I looked.
