It is a very faintly green here now, It was red in the past...at times it can be hard to see that it is MGO rather than white if it is in a container..

I very much doubt any Irish customs man will care if you have red diesel in your tank or not..

Indeed I think the less excise you have paid to the UK government the more he may be endeared to you...😊😊

MGO is usually the heavier darker Gas Oil used on ships and commercial vessels. Its Cetane Number is lower.

I guess there are two uses of the same name....

From the Revenue website...(linked to above)
What is Marked Gas Oil?
Marked gas oil (MGO) is diesel on which Mineral Oil Tax at a reduced rate has been paid on condition that it is used only for purposes that qualify for that reduced rate. ...

Pumps are often labelled MGO....if the fuel is for sale near where fishing boats are berthed, it will inevitably be MGO...(green)

Perhaps a more important question would be what would the position be if the OP filled up his Jerry cans and or tanks in Ireland before he headed back home.

Is there a duty free allowance? Is using Irish excise reduced fuel still taboo in Britain.

Could be a good saving at about a quid a liter.

If used in a boat I doubt anyone would notice or care. We're not Belgium.

Exactly . I wonder how may people on this forum have had their boat fuel inspected by any authority while in the UK or Eire
Just a guess that will be zero.

Since the new rules came in, I have not heard of any boat's tank being dipped, but have often encountered multi-agency roadblocks at which the Gardai make the usual checks on vehicles and Customs&Excise dip the tanks. If there is any trace of marked diesel detected the vehicle can be confiscated.

My business is Petrochems ...... MGO in the Petroleum market is MARINE Gas Oil .... the other is MDO ... MARINE Diesel OIl .....

What Retail Trade and Revenue call it - is another world ! Traders have no end of trouble with Customs and Excise all over the world because of 'Product Names' ...... it can mean huge differences in Tax and Dues levied. Example - importation into China ... over last 2 - 3 years, various grades have had so many changes in 'name' - we have to be extremely careful due to Tax and also volume quotas.
