I think a PM to him and ask what his job is would be an idea .....

He has been examined to the worlds collide to get the job he has and Coll R's are a significant part .... if he had made ONE gaf during his examinations as some do on here .... he would have failed without question.

I think you trod where others fear to tread ............ IMHO of course ....
 
Oh no, just an observation. MAy be appropriate to bear in mind when crossing traffic lanes that the captain of the ship may:

1)Not know CR or understand them
2)be entirelly rational

Something I've always tended to assume anyway;-)

Er ,Whats the problem here ? Don't we all go around the stern of oncoming larger and faster vessels ? Do you always pull out in front of oncoming traffic in your car and assume that the engine will never stutter or die?

Yup .. but these nutters will turn to starboard towards you just as you've altered to port to go behind

He struts a bridge. Can see the signs from 10,000 miles away, some of them go like it (some others turn to drink).

Nigel is an exception (especially when it comes to batteries where it is my role to strut /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif), of course, as are quite a few other masters too who seem to manage not to sucumb to power.

i know a ships master who has a fast powerboat,his insurance co. dont recognise his qualifications as relevant to small boats and place restrictions on unless he has a YM or Coastal Skipper on board.

Being a chap with a sense of humour still intact he finds it a source of amusement rather than getting uptight.

Ships officers have to have a very indepth knowledge of colregs to get their tickets that is indisputable its the practical application on a small boat that requires experience .

The RYA wont issue YM certs on production of any form of ticket .Candidates are still assessed as normal.

When my father's vessel was sunk in WWII he discovered the skipper had no idea how to sail the lifeboat they were in and the mate couldn't row! Age 17 he could do both. Modern sailors of course would expect to find a far higher standard of seamanship among the professionals.

Commercial vs RYA etc.

I am in same "boat" as he is ..... even though I am a Marine Surveyor, own a Survey co., have mucked about in boats since being a small child just able to walk ..... I can be given a silly Motor Boat day ticket or what-ever it is ....

As to the restrictions ... why ? what did he do wrong ? or why did he accept them ? Choose another Ins. Co.

To another post on here about Merch Master and Mate unable to row / sail a lifeboat ..... I do not say that is a story and maybe stretched ..... most likely true .... I will just say that ALL Deck Officers have had to for many years prove skill in lifeboats .... rowing and sailing - in fact qualify for Lifeboatmans Ticket which is done by a) practical examination of sailing / rowing the boat, b) aural examination of terms, seamnanship etc. and c) examination for EDH - which stands for Efficient Deck Hand ............ without these a candidate cannot hold a Deck Officers Licence or be employed as an Officer on a Brit ship etc. etc. (We are talking British Ships, British Licences)

I agree that many at sea I have known have shown little understanding of a yacht ... but that is for the actual operation of one .... the mechanics of Col. Regs etc. and obligations etc. are drummed in .... EVEN to those little Filipinos that people are too quick to have a go at. Sorry if I seem to be ranting here .... BUT I see a lot of ships, I visit a lot of ships, I have to work with a lot of ships officers, etc. And I do not agree with the oft quoted rubbish about Flags of Convenience and Third World Crews .... I for one spent quite a few years ON FOC ships as Officer etc. and I can tell you honestly - that they were genereally better than the old British Rust buckets I sailed on ....

When I left Brit ships to go Foreign Flag .... so many said - Nige why are you going .... they're c....p, dangerous, you'll be better staying on Brit ships etc. etc. How wrong they were ..... I was better paid, I had better conditions, I had less Brit bulls....t to contend with, better relations with Owners / office etc. etc.

Yes it is truie there are some ships out there that act wrongly, watchkeepers don't do their job properly etc. etc. I sincerely believe that it is not the fault of the watchkeeper .... but the modern day practice of reduced crews and increased work-load on each officer etc.

How many here would agree to the Merchant practice of months on a ship working : 00 to 04, off-duty then 12 to 16 etc. BUT that's when at sea .... get into port and the Mate normally goes onto Come on - Stop On during port stay and 3rd / 2nd mate do 6 hrs on 6hrs off ....
There used to be a competition on a few ships I was on .... bit of a joke really ... Who could actually get a straight 8 sleep ... - its not possible.
The rules if I remember rightly require that a Watch-officer get a minimum of 2hrs rest .... note it DOES not say sleep .... if having performed 8 or more hours duty prior .....

Suggest that lot to average factory floor and see what happens .....

I do not condone bad seamanship from ship or yacht - but also appreciate why it happens or at least some of the reasons that it can happen .....

Finally the worst ship I ever sailed on was crewed by British crew .... they were bitchy, slow, bloody minded etc. EG - I was on watch and wanted bridge windows washed ... it was an old fashioned ship that seaman would walk a rail to actually wipe the windows ... he refused saying that I wouldn't do it .... Right mate ..... I called my relief a little early and then got the bucket and cloth and did the bloody job myself - to show that I do not ask another to do what I do not appreciate myself .... he never refused again. I got in real sh...te with the Master over that .... today ? I still feel I did the right thing ....

Again I apologise for my rant !!!

Those Lifeboats are something else and if you ever have the misfortune to be in one .... !!

There is a good video somewhere on the web showing one released and then surviving an intense oil fire on water surface .....

They are of course engine powered - not row / sail and actually a relatively new type.

The traditional stowed lifeboats may still have a split between motor and sail ......
