Reasons to Panic

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

Been there done that!! Bloody free fall lifeboats!!! Never qagain, we only have to do that little lesson once!! As opposed to the HUET, I still hate that bloody thing and I've done it about twenty times!!

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

It's not 'a story stretched.' The vessel was the Jamaica Planter and it went down off Barry. You can add 'looking up things I've been told' to the list of skills you're so free with.

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

Skills I'm so free with ... "looking up things I've been told" ......

Actually I did not say it was not true - in fact what I did was highlight what I and many others had to do to get our Tickets ... if that is not acceptable info to you - then hard luck old bean.

I then quoted fact as I have seen first hand .... not reciting others views / observations .... sorry but I am not about to change history.

As to my being free with my skills ........... not quite sure if you are trying to be rude or just sarcastic with that .... I consider that if any knowlegde or experience that I have can help another - I will do just that ... and sorry again - but I will continue to do just that ....

You can put me on your "Ignored list" for all I care.

To all other Forum users - I apologiose for my post here - but I feel insulted and wish to reply to his post. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

<<Actually I did not say it was not true>> but it's what you implied, which is clear to anyone who reads your original post. Frank Mulville relates a very similar experience in 'Southern Cross'. It took place on another banana boat. You are not on my ignored list but if you persist in being so graceless you will go on my 'ignored big heads who don't like being caught out' list.

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

which is clear to anyone who reads your original post

Well you will have to exclude me from your claim made on behalf of "everyone" Capabar. I did not read Nigel's comments as inferring it was untrue.

In fact, in my reading of the post he even said it was "...most likely true...".

Maybe English is your second language so you did not grasp what was actually said.

John

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

Nigel caveatted around that post a great deal. Suspect Capabar read a few words out of the post, and assumed the rest?

I'm not getting into a discussion of 'everyone' as last time I objected to that terminology I was accused of pedantry despite the fact it was blatantly untrue. There are an awful lot of people on these forums who read a little of a sentence and make the rest up, as Lake Sailor tried to point out recently with little success.

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

You are so anxious to get into a row you misquote me to do it. Anyone and everyone is not the same word. Anyone can interpret roadsigns, everyone does not do it. Clear now?

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

BrendanS - I'm sorry that you are still so obviously smarting over the accusation of pedantry. In the exchange in question, in another place, you could have just as easily said simply that 'You liked/supported/were in favour of......etc' But no, in your own inimitable, self-advancing style you sought to rubbish the other contributor's choice of words. You are therefore, IMHO, guilty as charged.

ps words like everyone, everything, the best, etc when used in advertising are regaded as 'puff' and are not challengable in law!

Have a nice day.

Can we all get of this rubbish ....

a) What people read into anothers post - is their concern and their problem.
b) I don't really give a monkeys flying f...... as I have my Ticket, I can sail / row / cox a ships lifeboat ...
c) The whole argument about Ships Crew / Officers abilities is an area that will always lead to argument - especially in yachting circles ... as most have not been on a ships bridge, read what they see in papers etc. ....
d) Have no idea what is involved in Merchant Shipping work ... it is not only standing on a bridge looking out the window !!!

Sorry but I wnated to illustrate to those who didn't know - what qualifications and examinations / process a Merchant Ships Offoicer goes through to get his LIcence .... but it seems that I wasted my time ...

Capabar - I think we have had agreeable posts together before - without incident - but this one has made me ponder about changing my mind about Ignoring users ....

IF I have done something wrong - I apologise to all - unconditionally as nothing derogatory was ever intended ....

It may just mean now that I will consider keeping myself to myself now and watch the world go by ....

Oh .... actually one last parting shot ........... Is Capabar any chance of going on Cherbourg run >> I'd love to meet up and have a discussion .... !!

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

anyone who posts that 'everyone' is in agreement with a position, when it's factually untrue, deserves a slap down. I still totally disagree with the original statement, and feel strongly enough about it to keep disagreeing, no matter what devices you come up with to justify your position. Pedantry doesn't come into it at all, so piss off

On second thought ... why should I give in ?????

The Merchant Service gets a raw deal from some Yotties and the sort of posts that appear giving the impression that Merch has no clue what they are doing only makes me cringe ....

I don't disbelieve the claim about Officers not knowing how to row / sail a ships lifeboat - but as I understand it - it was a Wartime incident ... when training took a back-seat to bodies on ships to man them ...

The implication from the post was that Merch Officers are unable to sail or row a ships lifeboat .... which I showed is generally not the case .....

I will rest my case m'lord on the hundreds of stories that abound about ships lifeboats and their epic survival voyages etc. Merch and Andrews ....

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

<font color="blue"> 'so piss off' </font> Nice one. I asume that is the limit of your intellectual ability.
Rule number 1, Brendan, when you're in a hole, stop digging!

I don't know where you got that from. You are not allowed to describe something as "the best" in an advert in this country. Which is, of course, the whole point of the Heineken "Probably the best" adverts.

Re: Commercial vs RYA etc.

Who's in a hole? I can probably find the original threads showing that the sweeping generalisation that 'everyone' agreed with the subject in question, is categorically not true, if you are really determined to continue down this course

Ah yes now, you see I can back that statement up.
Dad was a first officer during the second world war and one of his duties was to be in charge of the mighty gun fitted onto the stern of his aged mechantman.
While off the South American coast, not in convoy a U boat surfaced, either he did'nt have any torpedoes left or did'nt want to waste one on this fine british vessel.
Anywayup a gunnery duel commenced with both sides banging away at each other for about twenty minutes and both being absolute crap unable to hit each other.
Luckily for our lot a destroyer came into sight and the U boat cleared off.
Dads boss decided that as they were [--word removed--] they needed to practise so set a target adrift.
Only problem was..... they had fired all the practise shells at the U boat. Apparantley they were wooden and filled with lead, but painted to look like the real thing.
Can't imagine the U boat commanders face if one of these had clanged into his ship.
Dad lost the command of the gun after that and they put someone in charge who actually knew what they were doing.
