After much re-evaluation of what is and is not important, I am very seriously considering buying a new boat (well used boat) that I can not only enjoy going out on at every opportunity, but... can live on during the summer!! I know, I know, not to go off around the world in, I have to work and earn my living - mores the pity, but a boat I can live on here in Poole/Christchurch. Having noe opted out of the property market for the time being, I'm renting a flat, sitting on the profit of the sale of my house and thinking!!

Why not? Winter lets are easy enough to get in the south, and I could spend every bit of the summer doing what I love best, and pay a bloody sight less in rent!.

So this is where I would like to draw on all your vast experience again, what would be the pitfalls? What's top of the list to consider when looking for the right boat? I want to be able to at least go across to France for a week or two, maybe weekends, not too worried about great speed, but equally don't want to take 2 days to get there! Also, fishing has to be taken into account, I love fishing, and want to be able to drift without too much height to catch the wind instead of the tide. It's alot to ask, but as previously, all advice is greatly appreciated!

I guess first issue before finding a boat, is finding a marina that will let you liveaboard, and also a fallback marina, in case the first does chuck you out for any reason. Reading the liveaboard forum over the years, many marinas are officially against in their terms and conditions, but will actually allow liveaboards as long as they behave themselves.

Other than that, sounds a wonderful idea

Now I've got my computer back. Not unrealistic if you put the planing into the idea at this stage. A boat can get pretty small fairly quickly when your spending lots of time on it. What sort of size were you thinking about.
As Brendan has said the marina/mooring will be the biggest hurdle. Obviously its got to be within commuting distance to work. Have one or two services that you need and be compliant with you spending the summer living on the boat. I'd say thats not impossible around poole. Good starting point may be you existing marina. You've got a history with them so may be they'll be a bit more sympathetic regarding your proposed plans.
Go for it, if I didn't have the family, I'd seriously look at it.

Suspect that it will be down to individual marina policy. Good point to start is the liveaboard forum. Lots of posts on this subject. Put a post on there, specifying that you want Poole area for commuting purposes (otherwise you'll get replies telling you how wonderful a little place in Cornwall is) as there is quite a lot of practical experience there.

Have you thought about buying a property (to keep yourself in the market) and then renting it out, that way you may get the best of both worlds, plus as your only property, capital gains tax can be dealt with by moving back in for a while before selling if or when you do.

Re Lynda

Hi Lynda good points raised so far re berthing etc, I know Brighton doesnt mind liveaboards, and indeed neither does Penton Hook I believe.

I have a boat for sale at Penton Hook, which suits your needs in that she has plenty of accomodation, (new heating too) and suits your cruising needs.

Shes a Broom 37 Crown. If interested PM me. Clive.

One of the marinas in Poole, has historically turned blind eye to liveaboards. You'll have to raft up to a wall rather than a pontoon. PM me if you are interested.

Re: Re Lynda

NIce way of getting the advert in, but how are Brighton or Chertsey suitable to someone working near Poole? Especially as I made the point about people posting about their favourite liveaboard spot in far flung non commutable places.

Doing it at the moment Linda.Only recently started(2 months)but thought we would give it a go at the worst time! We've now decided its fine and let the house. What I would advise is when you get the boat surveyed don't forget to get the shore power checked for earth faults etc(its often overlooked) as this can trip the entire pontoon, and can be very frustrating to find(never mind the walk of shame to reset!).If I can be of any help PM me.
Regards Al.

Re: Re Lynda

May reference to Brighton and Penton not minding liveaboards, was based on my knowledge of the aforementioned establishments, and did not imply that the young lady in question would find these locations of use, but merely to inform her that... "some marinas dont mind, maybe one near Poole wont mind either"

Ok I got an ad in also/forums/images/icons/wink.gif well spotted, it appears that you are the all seeing eye of the forum Brendan, you see more than the Dark Lord in Mordor.

Re: Re Lynda

Yep - he's the idiot that causes everyone to use the Americanised pronounciation. As a result of which I use it myself if anyone needs to spell it (hotels etc)

Thanks Barry, good points taken on "board", where I moor at the moment unfortunately is only moorings, no pontoon, just a pier for on and off stuff, all pretty basic stuff, the owner probably wouldn't have any problem with it, but few facilities available to make it work there.
