It looks like I might have to re-engine my Ocean 33, there's nothing wrong with the engine but the saildrive has given up the ghost and it makes more sense to buy a whole new engine package than to replace the drive.

I a looking at a Volvo D1-30 to replace my Volvo 2030 as it is pretty much a slot in. However, I would like to know if my current propeller, a Volvo three blade folder with a 17'' diameter and an 11'' pitch would still be suitable. The D1-30 is 28 HP compared to the 2030's 29 and revs to 3200 as opposed to 3600 for the 2030.

I have tried using the castlemarine calculator but it does not work with my version of windows. If somebody could run the figures through for me I would be most grateful, the boat is 28' lwl and displaces around 12,000lb; if the calculator needs more info, please let me know.

Dear Phil

Thanks for reply. A 17x12 is the alternative diameter and pitch that was available when my prop was fitted, I am hoping a 17x11 will be OK, I am not sure what sort of difference one inch in pitch would make.

Regards

Richard

The slightly smaller prop will mean slightly lower low speed on tickover, and slightly lower top end, but probably not that you would notice.

I am sorry that you have to replace a good working engine with another jys because the sterndrive is u/s. As Volvo engines seem to have a whole variety of sterndrive option from different makers, cant you source just a new sterndrive?

Don't have the gearbox ratio to hand, will get it tomorrow.

I have not done a great deal of research on alternative drives, but a straight replacement for the current drive is unavailable and nobody appears to be able to say when or even if they will become available. Changing to the current Volve drive would require a new drive plate and the total cost would be in the regionof £6K without adding value to the boat. A new engine package is available with a 25% discount which puts it in the region of about £8K but does mean I have a new engine rather than one that is fouteen years old, I add value to the boat, and should hopefully be able to reduce the difference further by selling the old engine which is, as far as I am aware, in very good condition.

Anybody want to buy a Volve 2030?

The reduction ratio of the 130 saildrive is 2.1:1 rather than 2.4:1, but because the new engine peaks at lower revs the shaft speed is virtually the same so you will be able to use the same prop. On my boat I have a 130 leg fitted to a 2030 so had to reduce the pitch on the prop. Got it spot on first time. If you are fitting a new engine it is a good time (bank balance permitting!0 to consider a new prop such as the Flex o fold i fitted. You will probably find your original prop is starting to wear (bush breaking up) and a new one is over £300 anyway!.

Sorry, just read your latest post. You can fit a 130 drive straight onto a 2030. I know I have had it done by a Volvo dealer. Total bill including a coolant change (in August 2010) including labour and a new prop was around £3400. Done at 3 days notice and took a day for 2 fitters.

If there is nothing wrong with the engine, that is the way to go, and if your old prop is in good nick you can have it repitched if necessary.

Not all Volvo dealers will do the deal as it is a bit complicated for them but I had quotes from 2 at the same price, fortunately one was in Poole, 5 minutes drive from my boat!

Dear Tranona

I have been quoted £3739 for a new drive but this is for the current model, a straight replacement is currently not and may never be available. In addition I am told that I will need a new drive plate which is £421 plus labour at £50 per hour estimated at 6-8 hours, plus the dread VAT which all together comes to the best part of £6K when you have added in the bits and bobs. My prop is a Volvo folder which I am not sure you could get re-pitchrd should this be necessary.

Where are you based? I have the invoice in front of me. The 130 drive was £2103. labour £400. Prop £193, cone kit £75, plus a few odds and sods and VAT total £3305. No new drive plate. You have to find a dealer who is prepared to split an engine/drive unit rather than buy a drive as a spare. Mine was done by Poole Marine Services but I had the same quote from Marine Power in the Hamble. There was definitely no change in the drive plate. With regard to prop, you may get away with the existing prop, but it will probably drop your revs to about 3300 max. You can get replacement blades for the Volvo prop if it does turn out to be too coarse.

I went through the same exercise as you - my boat was a charter boat and had about 3500 hours before the drive seized. The engine is fine - they easily run to 8000 hours. The only other alternative is a reconditioned drive from a company in Lancashire, but all my "friends" in the marine engine business advised against. It was about £800 cheaper but I would have had to fit it myself - and the 130 drive is better anyway - the split anode alone is worth something. If you do go down this route and you have a Stripper fitted you will need a new fixed cutter as the location of the drive peg is different.

Hope this helps

Dear Tranona

If I can have a second bite at the cherry, I am not quite following exactly what you had done. The saildrive splits into a top and bottom section; the problem with mine is that the cones have worn badly and also glazed the gears so simply replacing the cones does not appear as an option. Did you have both the upper and lower parts of the drive replaced or just one half?

The whole lot. The cones had seized on mine - legacy of 7 years of chartering! Not worth rebuilding as the oil is shared with the leg, and when you drain the oil you will find all sorts of metallic debris which does no favours to the other bearings and seals.

The part number of the drive is PMS34069 130s-B Drive 2.19:1, although I think that might be a dealer number as I think he took the assembly off a new engine. It included a new diaphragm.

Give Justin White a call at Poole Marine Services 01202 677387. My boat is a Bavaria 37 called Symphony in Poole Yacht Club - he should remember it.

Dear Tranona

I have spoken to Poole Marine Services and apparently they used to be able to split engine/drive packages and sort of mix and match but this is no longer available as an option; they are currently quoting a slightly higher price for the drive than that which I already have.

Thanks for the help anyway.
