Does anyone know if the raymarine rudder position sensor is a linear potentiometer, looking at adding rudder position to autohelm but at over £110 looking at other options. It 3 wire output so looks possible

I don't know I have one but when I installed my Evo autopilot I didn't bother adding the Raymarine sensor, instead I used the Ctrek one that was already installed. So basically any old rudder position sensor will do, it will just need calibrating.

Yes, you can use a 5k linear pot. The only problem lifespan. A normal carbon film will last you just a few days of normal cruising. You have to look for something more durable, usually pots that contain an oil bath. I ended up with one made in Slovakia (Can't remember where I got it from ;-( ). The manufacturer believes it can last 1/2 million turns and it is still working for me after 5 years.

you can get ready made whole assemblies from CN for under 20quid. I'm using them as custom gear selector sensors so don't mind if they're 5 10 or 20KOhm. Will try to remember and measure one today at the boat and let you know.

Worth Considering. Just buy a second hand RPS ?
Had one of these fail a while ago.Water ingress/old age.
Dismantled the unit and the part number was marked on the pot body. I used a Dremel to cut open the case
Discovered a second hidden unit, which had obviously failed at some time in the past.
The owner had merely cut the wires and left that sensor in situ.

Took both to bits, several differences between the two versions , both mechanically, flats on pot spindle vs serrated and electrical, wire colours were different and and curious extra resistor.
Seem also to remember some little plastic bits on moulding of case to prevent excess travel.
The pot most closely resembling the original came from Farnell.

Repaired unit failed a year or so later, remembering the faffing regards time cost of repairing item, simply went on ebay and bought a secondhand Raymarine RPS for around £70.00.
It came from the USA and was here within 10 days.
10 mins to fit.
Sold the duff units on Ebay for £25.00.

I think I have one in the garage which I took off the boat when I replaced the previous Wheelpilot. I you are interested I'll hoak it out and send a pic.

Don’t know of CN, have you a link?

sorry, mean China and ebay.
If you search ebay for :
DC 12v/24v Stainless Steel Plastic Rudder Angle Indicator Sensor
you'll get a few. Decent quality, identical to some VDO ones on sale for a few times more.

Tell me, but in these sensors there are only two wires (resistance 0-190 Ohm), and Raymarine pipes three wires. How did you resolve this issue? I will be grateful for the answer.

hi, it's really a long time I've done it and mind, I don't have Raymarine kit.
However, I think that all these are 3 wire job, two have the nut, third is the screw in front. The idea of a simple potentiometer is that it's got the two ends of the resistance and the third is the so called "wipper" that moves and gives out with each of the nuts a different resistance.
and sorry, don't even remember what the resistance was on mine, they are installed onboard now.

EDIT: before buying one, how about getting a couple of 1euro potentiometers from an electronics shop (say a 500Ohm and a 5kOhm) wire them and see that Raymarine likes it, before buying a Chinese copy off Ali/ebay?
