Raymarine Quantum Radar on Wifi

Just looking at a Nav upgrade for my boat, currently have old (circa 2003) Raymarine equipment, RL70, RL80 etc. I will stay with Raymarine but was wondering if anyone is using the Quantum radar connected by wifi not by cable and if you've had any issues or would recommend wifi vs cable?

Thanks

Richard

No issues, it works fine by WiFi. Switch it on and off by selecting between Standby and Transmit. Don't use the option to turn the Radar Off completely as it will then need to reconnect the WiFi next time you turn on the system.

Ours also has worked fine so far on WiFi for 7 years or so.
Never had an issue with the turn radar off function.

I went Quantum wifi and had no issues but do wonder what’s the point for a 37ft sports boat. You have to run cables up there anyway so why not hard wire it. When you switch on there is always a moment when you think will it connect? It always does of course….but you think one day it won’t!!
I did have some setting up issues which I thought was WiFi data overload clutter from the marina but it sorted itself out in the end.
If I did it again I would hard wire

Whilst I have no reason to doubt that Wi-Fi connection works okay my personal perspective is that given the purpose of radar (safety, particularly when navigating in the dark or in fog) I would prefer a hard wired system if that is achievable. Last thing you want is it dropping out just when you need it.

Wi-fi only, no issues but.......if I ever come across a data cable at a reasonable price, I would cable it just in case.

Thank you all for the replies, they are much appreciated. My inclination for something that could be considered a safety item is to hard wire it but I may just give wifi a try first given the positive responses from everyone that uses it.

On a related note for those who have replaced an analogue radar with the Quantum, does the Quantum use the same mounting points/holes?

Thanks again.

It was a while ago for me but I don’t remember having to drill extra holes so unless others have a better memory I’d say the holes are the same.
Are you fitting an Axiom MFD as well

Hi David and thanks for the reply.

Yes, planning to fit an Axiom 2 Pro 12 at lower and fly helm stations, just trying to work out how I connect everything together and interface with the Seatalk 1 network used for the autohelm and tri data etc.

If you are replacing a Pathfinder scanner then yes the hole footprint is the same. However the relation of the mounting plate to the scanner disk is different so I would compare the dimensions carefully from the Raymarine website if there is anything in close proximity.

Ah, thanks for the heads up, will need to look close at that as the stainless structure continues vertically behind the raydome.

I integrated everything together with the Raymarine STNG and miraculously it all worked. I don’t have an autohelm though. I was told that my depth sounder would need replacing but it didn’t. You probably won’t have problem covering the hole made by the RL70 but I had a plastic surround made for my smaller Axiom. Worked out ok

Thanks David,

I have an RC530 and an RL70C side by side at the lower helm so it's a fairly large blank plate that I need. Hopefully it'll work out okay, the MFD mounting screw positions are the unknown at the moment, not sure if they'll end up in the hole left from the old displays.

I doubt that the new MFD will fit the space left by the two units you will remove but no drama, getting a plate made up to cover it is straightforward. I have down several, such jobs and Brian award Electrical at Brundall have always down a good job. They aren’t the only ones of course but worth considering them as they will make one to your design.

Oh it definitely doesn't just fit the old space, I have a feeling the new MFD mounting screws will just be into the blanking plate because the old space is so large. I will need to find a way to better secure the new MFD..

R80 . In my case ordered a "cut to size" piece of black perspex which made a half decent job of covering the hole in the dash .
about £15.00 from Ebay.
