'rassed by the rozzers and messed about by a queen - in Portsmouth of course

I was fine today until I got scared again so didn't think it was sea sickness until on drug land and feeling like I'm swaying. Its not totally off putting but interesting feeling.
Lots of great advice. Regarding being scared I love the rush you feel under sail and the power of nature. Though I sometimes wonder if the other half would prefer a more confident crew.
No I have not attempted to crochet on board.
Karen

Lots of good advice above.
Let me just add congratulations, you got out there, on the water and did some sailing.
Too cold for me still, sympathise with Mrs, if you don't push too hard she will be a great sailing companion.
Well done!

It was quite mild, we actually felt the heat from the sun for about 30 seconds. Karen is mad for sailing, but she does take fright easily, so I have been adjusting how hard I push her. She is keen to learn a bigger boat, but she is a slip of a thing, so I need to make things better for her, modern winches will transform her experience

Was a lovely day today down on the boat sitting under the cockpit tent with the heater on in the sun in Portsmouth harbour so many congrats if you were out on the water with some flappy things up . If you really want to impress Mrs SC find a pair of modern winches with electrics and a self tacking headsail and then all is simples.

she would have nothing to do then! funnily enough we ended today trhying to figure out the tiny little cockpit tent, brand new and unused. We kind of sorted it roughly, we need the fasteners to do the job, but she was very happy with the extra space on the little boat.

Yes perhaps sunbathing or some navigation on the chartplotter ? Cockpit tent is brilliant idea and means you can also barbecue on board under shelter if too wet outside and it keeps it far warmer below at this time of year.

This misses the main thing, staying warm is essential to preventing seasickness, and, despite the feeling that you can't possibly go below if you get below and horizontal fast (head nearest the centre of pitching of the boat -for most boats this is the aft end of the saloon), you WILL feel better, but you DO need a bucket if you've left it too late to go below.

As a sufferer, I have been amazed how good it feels after the 24 hours or so you need to get over it...

My first sentence ?

even just mocked upo it made an instant difference. We are hardy types, we have sailed all over the solent year round in dinghys - BUT i tell you this, as soon as you have any comfort you wonder how you did without it!

Karen is very bad at staying warm, something we tried really hard at today to remedy, and it seemed to work. She is quite "shocky" in stress situations. One of those flotation suits mentioned elsewhere on here is going to be just the ticket I think in the winter. Ironically it wasnt so bad in a smaller boat, but then again we did wear wetsuits

Modern winches sounds like a plan. Great idea and way forward.
I am very petite 147cm I was taller but back problems mean I have shrunk.
I wrote dry land solent clown but don't know what happened there.
Hands are like claws so did use ibuprofen gel on them.
Next day off is Thursday possible day to fit modern winches and attach that cockpit canopy?

I have to work! Will see what I can do

I was replying to gladys who reckoned I hadn't mentioned keeping warm. Rather than a flotation suit which is a bit cumbersome how about a 'wooly bear ' 1 piece fleece as worn under drysuits, then waterproofs if required inc jacket to keep the wind out ?

might be a plan. I will look in to it

Seems like a pair of heated gloves might be the solution. Great for skiing but never tried afloat . I think they make sleeping bags with legs so once wedged in by the winch with a new electric winch handle thingy no need to move at all . Hope you have a good sail
