Anyone wearing a white jacket with a sail number on the sleeve usually needs avoiding....'Look everyone I've got a boat!!!!', and if you're unlucky to have been on the same trip and not seen more than 20 knots..... they 'had '50 knots over the deck!'....

Boils my piss as they say!
Never seen a raggie in one of those jackets, they're not even waterproof. Seem to be worn exclusively by mobos, usually matching his & hers, certainly round Cowes ;)

Had a very similar incident at Hamble point, while having a quiet coffee with SWMBO, duty Harridan was leading the "We are the champions" singalong after the crew of a yot had completed the RTI race a couple of years ago. Noticing the old fashioned looks we must have been giving them she said.." I bet you never got round the island in less than (cant remember the number of) hours"....... actually I have, I said... in 2005 .... but without a sail, and in less than 53 minutes. we had to keep the revs down though to stop the motor blowing at over 82 mph...............................the expression on her face was priceless...a mixture of disbelief and disgust........................... Sometimes it just has to be done. (Would have been quicker but our course ran round various compulsory marks at the Needles and Bembridge....)
I think you have the general mobos misunderstanding of sailing if you think that is impressive. The average sailor would be totally underwhelmed by such a claim. Now if you said you had sailed it in under 3 hours and 8 minutes, they would've been impressed...

Actually.....I have an original "Escapist" which was the first round that Will and his team developed into what is now Quba although he now longer has any involvement. It must be at least 20 years old now and still lives in my cupboard pretty much without hanger as its so stiff...this was a proper sail without numbers. It was another 10 years before they went main stream. Its actually very well made and waterproof and saved my skin (literally) when I cycled back form a party in my late teens and crashed into a wall !

I think you would be disappointed with the current product, but then they are aimed at a less demanding market... ;)

How do you avoid them ?
We had a lovely meal out at the weekend but the raggies had taken kids with them that must have been held up on board for a month as they made their presence known !!!!

DAKA, you have proved yet again that you have not lost the ability to rattle the cages of the poor downtrodden raggies.:)

Well done, keep up the good work.:encouragement:

I'm a raggie and I do hate big loud sailing crews when I eat out, the same way I hate loud rugby fans' tables and large groups of City types on a corporate night out. Same voices, same sense of entitlement, same total lack of interest in anybody in the room having a good time except themselves.

Funnily when you add a few children then I find it part of a good lively atmosphere, with very few children actually being obnoxious, just mostly having fun.

Do forgive me on this question as this thread looks rather interesting and amusing but what is a " raggie " is this a nautical term for chav or as the scots call them neds ?

jon

This is definitely UK based thing as here in the med a lot of the owners drink in the same bars around the marina and there is never any mobo/ raggie divide we are there to enjoy what we do and enjoy each other's company in tee shirts and shorts one millionaire looks much like a boat cleaner ......

I try not to differentiate between people who enjoy being on the water, whilst out for a meal however I try to avoid the pretentious stinkpot tables, they are easy to spot as they usually have under table lights fitted.

Thanks pete - I didn't think there would be a divide amongst boaters but then again when you think about it I am sure raggies think they are supreme as to them it would be proper sailing.
me personally its not my thing I would rather let the engine do the work than mess about with sails and ropes.
As long as you get to where you are heading safely then who cares.

I was only thinking about this yesterday, there was a group of sailors sat in the pub/ eatery wearing their foulies including salopets and boots, OK the pub is near the marina but take a change of clothes guys.

Sound a bit like those aircrew types who will persist on wearing their overalls in the mess.

I'm with this guy :encouragement: Honestly, one of the reasons I got a boat is because I have a son with ASD we cant go anywhere public as a family without a couple intolerant and impatient gits throwing a hissy fit. Kids are a fact of life, the OP is all grown up now, but judging from his it's all about me attitude, not by much I'd garner.
