They're doing the breath test for boats on You and Yours right now Tues 12 noon

Just listened to it. Why does every TV or radio programme portray boaters as a bunch of pompous old farts.

I didn't hear it that way. I thought that they rather thought it amusing that the government was operating a sledgehammer approach.

I'm with Steve on this - I though Tom Cunliffe came across well and was interesting that shipping minister had no stats to show how much of a problem it was.

Would have been interesting if they had put some of the other tricky elements of the issue in front of him - i.e. the boat at anchor being made to move, how do you enforce it without licenses or is it a backdoor route to licenses etc but for a 10 minute piece made a good start.

Sorry, did not mean that there was anything wrong with the content of the programme, just that everyone interviewed was a "rar rar, jolly good chap" folk. No run of the mill fella.

There is a perception amongst the non boaty folks that boats are for the upper classes, and this sort of interview does not help dispel that myth.

Re: driving licences for boats

Good idea - anyone already having a boat or wanting a licence can apply for licence and pay a fee to TB liar and co - No test required AKA Vehicle driving licences 1903 -

Motor Car Act 1903 required that all vehicles had to be registered, and to display registration marks in a prominent position. The fee was twenty shillings (£1). The first registration marks consisted of one letter and one number, the first (A1) was issued by London County Council.
Driving licences introduced - obtained by paying a fee of five shillings (25p) across the counter at a Post Office. (At this time they were used merely for identification purposes.)
First use of windscreens. These were made of ordinary glass and inflicted terrible injuries in accidents.
Speed limit raised to 20mph with heavy fines for speeding and reckless driving.
Henry Ford forms his company to manufacture automobiles.

Then, after 30 years or so make a test compulsry AKA Vehicle driving licences 1935 -

Driving tests introduced on a voluntary basis on 13 March and became compulsory on 1 June.
30mph speed limit re-introduced in urban areas.
First Provisional Driving Licences introduced. They lasted for three months and drivers were required to display 'L' plates on their vehicle.
First use of windscreen wipers.
New edition of The Highway Code published.

Hmmm I have just listened to the prog. & IMHO I thought it was trash. It did not get into the actual legislation that is proposed. The boating community was portrayed as a load of old ‘Gaffers’
There was no real probing of the minister (que John Humphries) & the 'Minister' had any idea what he was talking about... very telling was the question 'Do you have a boat?' minister 'No'

"So there you go I don't own a boat, really have no idea what you or I am talking about! But hey what the **** I am the minister of all things boaty & I need to justify my position/employment so lets do something easy that the general public can understand – keep those large boats from running down the kids on the Beach cause they are all drunk”

Prats!!!!

This is really getting to be the most ridiculous idea the faceless ones have come up with yet!

Why don't the West Country TV or anyone, have an interview with Boaty Minister & some representative's from the boating/MCA/RNLI community?
