Reminds me of a Buster Keaton movie where he was so proud of his boat he called it "Damn fino" and when he called up CG in a storm and was asked the name of his boat he replied Damfino and the CG said "well if you don't know how do you expect me to?"

Some years ago, I saw a small wooden sailing dinghy named "May Day".
I don't think it was big enough to have a VHF, as a licence wouldn't get issued.

Yes, from the film "The Boat" (1921). The International Buster Keaton Society is nicknamed The Damfinos because of it.

Thought it was 'Oh I say, Ding Dong'. A Stewart 37 maybe?

It is, and a jolly fast boat it is too, by the standards of the day.

Pretty. Any idea how it came to be so named?

Well, it was commissioned and owned by Richard Matthews of Oyster fame (and Crusader). I would suspect it came about at the start of the first breezy downwind leg on the shakedown trials......

It is pretty to look at in a racy sort of way. Robbie Stewart has turned out some very nice boats over the years.

It won Burnham Town Cup first time out, and twice more in other years.

Too small for a fixed VHF, but a handheld on the Flying Fifteen called "Uffa Fox Sake" could be highly amusing! Everyone you called would sound really arsey when they replied...

There should be no confusion really if the message is in the correct speak "This is the Yacht:-", "This is the Gaff Cutter:-", "This is the Motor Vessel:-" etc.
eg "This is the Twin Screw Diesel Yacht Fox Trotter"

and I do remember an off shore Power boat at one of the OS events at St Peter port Guernsey in the 80s "Shy Torque"
Or you could go on this one out of Whitby:-

Our boat is called Freedom Three and I really struggle to say it without getting the F and T around the wrong way. Not just on the VHF either!

Our boat is called Jalfrezi, but formerly was called "touch and go" - far too many unpleasant interpretations. Jalfrezi is easy to say, and simple to spell out on the radio, so we kept it.
