We were once told to “F”*** O** “ by the Duke of Edinburgh at Cowes week when he had to alter course at close quarters to avoid us. We were both racing and it was our right of way. He was in an small open classic boat with 3 crew.

Our anti royalist bowman replied “Learn the rules you senile old git” which caused much amusement on both boats, including the DoE who laughed.

When we were kids, back in the late 50's we used to wander up to Smiths Lawn in Windsor Park to watch the Polo, I remember on e match when the DoE was chasing the ball and Jimmy Edwards who was also playing was potentially getting in the way and DoE simply shouted"Edwards! Get your fat arse out the way"
Have over the years occasionally met DoE in various situations, and found he can be a bit abrupt at times, but he also does have a real sense of humour.
