quietest outboard

Had a quiet and more noisy Mercury both 4x4.
More people look at trucks than boats,
Fewer boats than trucks,
More sea than road.

Works for me!
Maybe I should try that as Haiku...

I've just bought a 5Hp Hidea four stroke, very quiet, started 3rd pull from out of the box, only 511 quids, and only weighs 22kg.
Their 6Hp is just a higher powered, slightly more expensive version.

p.s. I am really enjoying the DVD's, they're the only decent thing on the box offshore Saudi!

can you imagine the told you so;s I would get on here if I bought one

an"d

bless you for watching the dvds - I shall put it on the next cover

"better than saudi tv"

which is of course a nation well respected across the globe for their small boat cruising expertise

Ha ha! Easily imagine lots of criticism from forumites on their chinese made PC's sitting in front of their chinese made TV's eating chinese take-aways.
However the engines are still quiet, cheap, and relatively lightweight.

underwater exhaust

you speak wise words

how many exhaust through the prop or under the water - I had assumed they all do

something to watch out for

it would be great to stop the cockpit filling with fumes

although...... green conscience here..... do the fish deserve the fumes to be injected straight into their world?

Multi-cylinder motors tend to be noisier in that the pitch and "beats per rev" (OK I know it's a fraction, 1 beat per rev for a twin, half a beat per rev for a single) are both higher.
Single cylinder motors, if low vibration, are more pleasant to my ears.
Honda rattled and shook, Yamaha was OK, Mariner and Tohatsu have been very quiet.

seagulls always start if you treat them right

they never wear out

but they are noisy polluting things and should only ever be run in a dustbin for demonstration purposes

I expect putting it onto a bendy transom and dipping the plug and points into the water had something to do with the not starting bit. I run an electric ob on the tender these days, it usually starts first pull and all the polluting is done at the power station. Very quiet too, but not 6hp by any stretch of the imagination.

Depends on size. The size you're looking at will certainly be water-cooled, which aids to quietening things down. A two cylinder will IMO be quieter than a single. Less vibey too, which can generate noise through vibration and resonance.

I remember Air-Cooled, 2 hp Honda's being horridly noisy, and not a nice sound either..

my little honda 2.3 is aircooled and is very noisy

however, it runs out of the water when I go along the foredeck and will not overheat

it is pretty quiet at low revs

but at full blatt is horrible

generally I am not in a rush

They certainly have their merits.. Being quiet is not one of 'em. :)

Pointless information but a triple cylinder outboard would be the smoothest running. But you'd never get one in small capacity.

I think Tohatsu may be your best contender so far.
