Questions from a first time buyer.

Avocet: I'm going to look into the specifics of resining in the ballast, so thanks for the pointers.

Bilbo: Good points. I guess that the issue with rigging loads is somthing that I'll leave to the surveyor. On the plus side, the last survey (2005) didn't flag up anything on that score. The mizzen may be new since then, but it really is a tiny sail, so I'm not overly concerned about that, but again, something I'll leave to the surveyor.

Machurley: The designs, I believe, came from the offices of Angus Primrose, and the boats were built by a Scottish company. 'Deep Water Yachts' perhaps? That was certainly the name on some of the old paperwork that the owner showed us.

Yes, It's quite a coincidence that there are two for sale within 15miles of each other. The other one has been left pretty much in its original condition i.e. cutter rig and bowsprit. It too is a nice boat, and in many ways in a better condition. However, on the minus side, she feels smaller, the ballast is iron rather than lead, the engine is less powerful and is salt water cooled, and there is only a chemical toilet. Oh and she's £1000 more expensive.

I take your point about resale value (that's also a concern of ours), but at the end of the day, we have to balance that against having a boat that we like. Something we'll have to consider carefully.

Conditions weren't ideal for the trial. No more than F3, I'd have said, but enough to get an idea of how she sails.

Thankyou all for the comments and advice.
