I am in the process of replacing the rubber on a 120S volvo saildrive. I have split the leg from the gearbox & inspite of seeing instructions for several versions of the 120S having a spring on the spline I did not see one come out. This saildrive has been separated in the past.
What i cannot understand is why every version of the saildrive shown with the parts pack has a spring & this one does not have one.
Can any one tell me if they have separated a 120 saildrive & found it not to have a spring. I am not sure exactly which version of the 120 it is as I cannot find any markings to identify it. It is fitted to a 2020MD.
It may be it was left out in the last seal change, but i cannot understand why

The type label should be on the top aft end of the gearbox. Not sure which part you're talking about - marinepartseurope has exploded drawings with numbers on them to point it out.

Thanks for the link. Helps a lot. They do not show the spring either. The leg number is not on the gearbox ( only the gearbox No) However, It seems that the spring is only shown in the instructions supplied with the saildrive rubber
So coupled with Cantata's comment I will assume it never existed ( & we all know what assumption is !!!)

Mine is a 120SD, year 1995, gearbox part no. is 120SD 2 48, it is still in the garage as I have been waiting for some decent spline grease before screwing it back on to the engine, I can not recall any spring when I separated the leg, not to say there was not one there, just not obvious in the process.
Nearly certain you are okay.

Just re-read the old PBO article on this, and note no mention of springs. When reassembling, emphasis is laid on
shims being replaced, and SS or monel wire inserted through two screws each side of the leg.

Have to confess to being a total idiot
Having looked at this drawing a dozen times & holding the shims in my hand I suddenly realised that the instruction 3D drawing was not showing a coil spring but the shims stacked one on top of the other so it looked like a coiled spring.
I already knew about the shims but just had total brain fade .
Saildrive all bolted up now & thanks one and all for bearing with me
