OK then Matt...I will rise to the bait!

Just to show that we "Raggies" have no animosity towards you "Stinkpotters", and that we genuinely just enjoy being on the water, I will answer your questions!

1)THE TRAVELLER - Wind this up to the windward side when beating(going to windward) in light to medium airs, and ease the mainsheet out so that the boom can sit amidships. The effect of this is a better aerodynamic profile on the mainsail(the big flappy sail at the back!) with an 'open' Leach (back of the mainsail) which should give better windward drive in lightish conditions. As the wind increases, lower the traveller to leeward, while increasing the amount of tension you apply to the vang (the thing that holds the boom down!). What this should do is flatten the mainsails shape which will give better boathandling in the more breezy conditions.

2) THE CARS - As a rule of thumb, to give the best angle of pull on the Headsail, take an imaginary line at 45 degrees from where the headsail sheets are attached to the headsail, follow this line down to the track, and adjust the cars to that position! Moving the car forward from there will have the effect of tightening the leach which can lead to stalling of the airflow over the sail, and aft will open the leach which can be beneficial in lighter airs.

3) As for a Website/books etc. Well how many books do you want listed??? There are hundreds of them out there. As for websites, of course you could post to Shutyerbutt, but they will probably take the p*** because that sort of question is a bit beneath them. But seriously, try BYM, Chez Marian whatever you wish to call it, they WILL try to help in a sensible fashion!

If all else fails...switch the engine on!

Bog usage, speed improvments

As in all things Matt, weight is the key. If the toilet is a holding tank then no improvement, if it is a sea toilet or pump out then "dumping" the weight will show a speed improvement....

Have you seen how slim these round the world types are?

How about an 'Unfairline' or a 'SeaDeathRay' or even a 'Princeusesfartomuchfueless'

I think they should go down like tax on Diesel or poloution controls for diesles...?

Ah yes..but you must also remember to instruct your crew to use the loo as much as possible...this will reduce the boats weight and make it go faster...or make one of them haev to clena up the skippers **** in a gale around lands end..all very character building..so he told me..?

Re:rise to the bait!

I feel i must apoligise on behalf of all the yotties out here. We are sorry that we sometimes get in the way so that you have to alter your course from the perfect straight line on the GPS. It must be really upsetting when you get back to your marina and review the days events on the GPS...i guess you must be ashamed to show your firends anything but complete conformity to the GPS and at it says..

So once agian sorry..XX

Re:rise to the bait!

The worst bit is all the little slight bumps you can detect while in the saloon underway and the fact you have to polish the pointy bit of the boat again and again to remove the scrape marks .Sometimes you can actually here and see yotties greeting you in the water as you pass by.

Hey Matts, V good questions.. some interesting answers too.

The genoa cars. In most light/mod winds set the car so that the sail looks like it has the same curve all the way up it's height. Don't wind it tight in light airs and when you tack, wind the last couple of feet slowly as the boat picks up speed. As wind speed increases, move the cars aft. That is when you can start getting Mrs S to work hard on the winches! Moving the cars aft closes the botom of the sail and can be winched in like a board. That reduces the curve and the heeling effect and opens the top of the sail that also reduces the heel.

You can keep the full headsail driving when others are rolling theirs in..

The Main track. In really light conditions move it to windward, ease the main sheet, kicker and halyard. (or motor). As wind increases move in towards the centre and tighten in the others. If it blows a lot, you can tighten everything to flatten the sail and depower it by dropping the track down to leeward.

Lots of fun!

There are loads of books (probably contradicting the above) or you can come racing with me!!

Re:rise to the bait!

I'm surprised that you actually see anything. Most of the power boats i see wizzing around are certainly not driven by anybody that can see anything....

So tell me something...at birth do power boat drivers get a special 'i don't care' gene injected or is it saved for when ownership starts.

Re: the correct answer is....

Why put deisels...fit petrols..when you get bored with it or it gets dirty you can set fire to it and it will make a nice warming fire..just what you need to keep you warm on a winters night.

Re:rise

How are you supposed to see anything from down below and i certainly have no intention of going up top into that nasty rain/wind/spray etc etc.
