OK then Matt...I will rise to the bait!
Just to show that we "Raggies" have no animosity towards you "Stinkpotters", and that we genuinely just enjoy being on the water, I will answer your questions!
1)THE TRAVELLER - Wind this up to the windward side when beating(going to windward) in light to medium airs, and ease the mainsheet out so that the boom can sit amidships. The effect of this is a better aerodynamic profile on the mainsail(the big flappy sail at the back!) with an 'open' Leach (back of the mainsail) which should give better windward drive in lightish conditions. As the wind increases, lower the traveller to leeward, while increasing the amount of tension you apply to the vang (the thing that holds the boom down!). What this should do is flatten the mainsails shape which will give better boathandling in the more breezy conditions.
2) THE CARS - As a rule of thumb, to give the best angle of pull on the Headsail, take an imaginary line at 45 degrees from where the headsail sheets are attached to the headsail, follow this line down to the track, and adjust the cars to that position! Moving the car forward from there will have the effect of tightening the leach which can lead to stalling of the airflow over the sail, and aft will open the leach which can be beneficial in lighter airs.
3) As for a Website/books etc. Well how many books do you want listed??? There are hundreds of them out there. As for websites, of course you could post to Shutyerbutt, but they will probably take the p*** because that sort of question is a bit beneath them. But seriously, try BYM, Chez Marian whatever you wish to call it, they WILL try to help in a sensible fashion!
If all else fails...switch the engine on!
