Protecting Teak Gratings

We've spent hours....seemingly days removing layers of old varnish from the team grating which we inherited with our boat. What's the best way to protect them going forward - teak oil all over, or just ontop with varnish underneath? Of something else??

If this is a cockpit grating, Richard, I'd sand it back ansd then leave it bare. Do it carefully, though, or you'll get a raised grain.

Come to think of it, I'd do this whatever sort of grating it is.

But if you want to finish it, use oil rather than varnish.

I've had a similar problem with my rubbing strakes. After varnishing them they looked lovely, but in a very short lenth of time they look grotty again. I now use a product clled 'Decks oilie' (Thats not how its spelt, but is how its pronounsed) It come in two types 'number 1 and number 2'. Number 1 is the saturator and is what you want. It is very easy to apply, once the old varnish is removed, you just slosh it on. As it dosn't skin, ther is no more scraping.

...and from what I gather, you don't want to use the No. 2, as it's even worse to get off than varnish.
