Proposal for PWC (aka jetski) pontoon parking at Brightlingsea

You won't change that, so you have to learn to live with it.

I've had jetskis and mobos and now own a sailboat. I've also come across owners of all three that have been complete idiots.

There is a stretch of The Orwell near SYH that is designated for skiing, the speedboats whizzing up and down don't seem to be a problem for anyone.

The water is there for us all to use, responsibly, and we should all respect everyone else's right to use it.

That may be so but it doesn't answer the question as to whether having yet more jetskis in Brightlingsea would be desirable.

As for the moronic comment that sailing boats cause distress by zigzagging comparable to the effect of powered craft operated recklessly, the writer merely displays his lack of understanding.

And you are demonstrating your lack of consideration and acceptance that the water is for everyone. Sail boats out number powered craft many times so perhaps we need far fewer of them and redress the balance. Perhaps you should look in a mirror to see what the maker of moronic comments looks like then you will spot them better in the future.

Tell me why is a sail boat tacking not reckless but a jet ski at speed is.
 
Bigplumbs - if a sailing boat is trying to go upwind they cannot go directly towards the wind. It's physics. It can't be done. The best is to try to sail as 'close' to the wind to make progress by tacking as the boat runs out of water. Every sailing boat has difference performance (and indeed so does the skipper). My boat is not a pedigree and she doesn't sail that close to the wind compared to a modern high performance boat (or indeed some might say compared to an average modern yacht (for the sake of harmony I have avoided the proper term 'average plastic yacht' so I am not using that). If a sailing boat is racing it is critical to sail as close as possible to the wind; sail too close and the boat will slow and eventually stall and lose control. If a MAB (that's me) it is critical to sail as close as possible if I am to make progress up river. If against the tide, the skill is critical to make progress against the wind. If a boat - sail or mobo that forces a yacht to delay tacking (there are some racing rules that can be used tactically) can cause a yacht - for example may draw 2+metres - to go aground even cause damage.

A jet ski zigzagging is just trying to avoid boredom.

Sailor can discuss the thread now a thousand times to discuss how close to the wind a yacht can or should be sailed. No sailor, I would suggest, ever tacks unnecessarily.

Actually what I was going to say about the point of this thread that if I owned a jetski I would be very, very worried about the security.

I Know about the physics of tacking my point is if you have an engine put it on if the river is busy so as to be considerate to the other water users. If you are racing then perhaps you are also being reckless

Tell me why a Yacht can race in a crowded area but a powered vessel (which you would agree has more control) cannot

You don't think there is a difference between a sailboat tacking, for whatever reason, at 4 or 5 knots and a 70 MPH jetski ?

I am summing that you are exaggerating for effect. While there may be some PWCs out there that can do 70mph, the average one seen around Brightlingsea will be doing more like 30-40mph at the most.
 
Years ago the horse was the only way of getting around, but with the arrival of the motor car they started to get in the way & eventually gave way to the motor.
Years ago the wind powered boat was the only way to travel on water, but with the arrival of the motor boat they started to get in the way..................

Both of mine did 70mph. Either way, comparing a sailboat tacking to a jetski weaving through moorings at high speed is nonsense.

I'm all for giving everyone an oppertunity to get on the water, using whatever type of vessel they want. Providing everyone respects the other users. Some of the posts here clearly show a lack of respect and understanding.

I used to be a regular visitor here. Reading the contentious posts hear have reminded me why I stopped.

If someone can not appreciate the noise and environmental impact of PWC and planing mobos is far greater than a sail powered craft than nothing anyone can say here is going to open their eyes to the truthl. When we used to meet socially people regulated their own on-line behaviour knowing we could very well meet face to face. Trolls hide behind the anonymity of the internet.
