I understand that when visiting other EU countries it is neccesry to carry proof that VAT was paid on the boat, unless the boat is exempt due to age.

Can anyone tell me when the exemption date is and what constitutes proof of either VAT payment or the age of the boat?

I have a 1979 Broom Ocean 37 and was wondering what I need to get my hands on to avoid difficulties with officialdom in some far off port.

Thanks.

Its 1985.

As long as you have some kind of paperwork with the boats name on from before then that proves it was in existence before then, you should be ok.

eg Mooring fee, old license.

Maybe you could get a copy of the builders certificate from Broom?

January 1st 1985 is the date from which you have to prove VAT paid/unpaid. Before that they were regarded as Exempt, as long as you have a mooring/storage receipt to prove boat was in the EU on 31st December 1992. If it wasn't in the EU then and it was built before 1st Jan 1985 then it has to be VAT paid.

Thanks all - I'll give Brooms a try, they tend to keep good records
