Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craftwork

Always thought it was solid wood , y'live n learn , and I've got to do that fast , which is why I need all the help and advice I can get . Tell you what , if you do the first 50 ft to show me , and I do the rest , how does that sound /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What "Percy" needs is a standing committee which can deal with authority on weighty matters of venneers et al,whilst a sub -committee co-opted from the forum can get on with realquestions ,like electing officers etc..........

In that case , you can start with the VERY weighty matter of insurance , tug , and stopping her sinking when she's moved , first /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif , anyone helping out in any matters relating to this project , will have something like Victorious , to look back and say "I helped do that" , for me it'll probably be one of the last trips I make when she sets sail again , but I don't care , I just want to do anything I can to stop her going to the kerosene.
However , do you normally take liberties with elderly ladies and shorten thier titles /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For you , , take the liberty , , it's actually easier to say , though I shan't rename her , but as we're all getting a lot more familiar , I think she'll excuse us
Out of interest , anyone know who was in power in 1889 , Queen Victoria I think , but not sure

Hi David.
I like your little pal looks quite tame just like the ones at our stables totally fearless. I wish you good luck with the 'ships movements' have you had a surveyor or some one with a knowledge of Barge timbers look at her inner hull and sound it, a good guy should be able to do a soundness test with a light hammer on all her under water planks and hull timbers and asses if there is any rot or unsound wood in her. Some of them can ring keel bolts with considerable accuracy supposedly it is not to difficult just a matter tuning your ear to the note a bit like ringing any metal component or a cracked plate or cup, the wood has a good sound or a soggy dull thud, but it doe's need the trained ear. and these guys can do it in their sleep. When I was with Manchester Liners and working on board a ship in Dry Dock I remember a surveyor spending 2/3 days just going round the hull plates tap tap tap drove us round the twist.
As mentioned on a post there is the problem of old caulking being loosened if she takes any pounding in a sea way but as you say it will be the end of April when she is moved the weather will have improved some what by then.
Cheers David.

Yes, she'd celebrated her golden jubilee 2 years before P was launched. In the same year the Eiffel Tower was opened and Hitler was born and Austria's royal family was shaken by the murder/suicide at Mayerling. Back here at home some of the news could have been written in today's papers - plus ca change c'est plus ca meme chose - boating manners on the Thames seem even then to have been a problem:

It seems gun crime in the Midlands was already a problem in 1889:

Of course, hanging would still be in vogue for another 70 years or so, and Merchant Seamen were not always as civilised as they are these days:

And finally .... the RYA's advice on boat safety also applied to leisure boaters in 1889:

Jeez , I'm having fun , and that's just in keeping up with this thread
Right
re Raedwald , isn't it nice to know some boaty things don't change , not so nice to see when Hitler was born .
Re Old_Salt one of the problems I have is finding someone that can do a good wooden boat survey , as already pointed out , a survey was done on one , and it sank , so if anyone knows someone that can do it , please please tell me
re seaspray111 , sorry , don't need it at the moment , misunderstanding I think

and mogy , yup , but if I do that it'll be split , and even more confusing , anyone fancy doing a seperate thread with a precis of what's happening be my guest . I know some that don't usually visit this forum , take one look and run , so a short version with the advice to add their comments on here might help /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Cheers

This adventure needs it's own FORUM now sort it with Keith or else "There will be trouble ahead"
In your spare time of course Dave /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ive just been looking for timber for Forbsies new project and have come across Afromosia . Its part of the Iroko family as Teak is but its mechanical values seem better than Teak . Ill let you know what i find out and costings as i find them , im just wondering if all the values are better than Teak why it isnt used instead of Teak /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

So it's all looking good for after the move anyway , thanks all .
Main problem at the moment though is the tug and mooring.
It has been pointed out that Fambridge are expensive , which I know , but thought that was standard for the area , so all possible alternatives requested please.
Next - how many variations can tug boat people come up with , latest wants full survey so his insurance covers the crossing , and wants to notify Medway Ports ? Why ?

S it's back to HELP
Moorings , South Essex
Tugs
Insurance - possible on a leeky wooden boat without
Survey- Someone that isn't going to sting , knows what he's doing , isn't going to say no chance just cos it's got wet wood

She will have a generator and pumps on board , because I know she leeks

Try asking at Eel pie island , they get some big big boats on thier slip so maybe able to help . Ill try and nip down tomorrow and get thier number .
Back to the timber thing ..... It seems Afromosia is a more durable timber than Teak and Iroko and could well be cheaper , but im still waiting on prices .

Thanks Jason , after sundays round trip , I don't think I could manage a trip to eel pie and do a days work too , you're a star , works just flat out at the moment

pm me your number cause i cant give them half details about this , if i manage to get down there ill need to call you so you can deal direct
If they cant help i know a proper type captain bloke i went to school with that may know a thing or two .

Sod PM Jason , for this I'll risk the cranks that haven't met the dog
To you and anyone else that can help , my mobile is 07859 853 114

I am a sole proprietor , so the answer will be along the lines of Glenside Electrics , it's me !

Thanks Jason
