Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craftwork

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Thanks for that, good reference point, and I think by the time she's done there will be a few people fed up of hearing about her , so you will probably be quite near the top of the short queu /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif , according to my research she had about 2000 ft of planking redone only a few years ago , let's hope properly

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Moose , I am breaking all the rules , she will take as long as she takes to get her right, and as much money as I can afford each month to spend on her. Any , and all , volunteer labour will be very much appreciated , as will all skills etc , but if I hadn't bought her she would be firewood in a month . Yes it's daunting , but the end result , all that pay , play, and I don't mean just money

You're so lucky that the orginal aft cabin looks intact - just imagine all the beautiful wood under that paint ... yummy .... (written by one who gets very excited by a tin of nitromors, a brush and a painted surface...)

We chartered the 'Ena' years ago for a joint birthday thingy and I've loved Thames barges ever since - lucky man!

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Thanks Doug, will bear that in mind, just a small update , looks like we will be moving her to Essex , had a good offer of a berth , and guess what , not confirmed yet , but had an e.mail from somebody that may be the grand daughter of one of her old skippers , if she's on the forum please say hello.

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

The limit for SSR is 79' - but when it's close as yours may be - and appears to be over 24m - some funny measurement rules apply (e.g. don't count a transome hung rudder, bow rubbing piece) so may need to be certified by a naval architect

But I'd be very surprised if she wasn't already Pt 1 registered - is there a number / tonnage carved on a beam? Or a plate?

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

well done and the best of luck. i'd suggest you buy a copy of "spritsail barges of the Thames and medway" by Edgar j march, this book detail in minute detail several Thames barges and includes drawings. several editions are available mine is a first edition but id recommend a newer edition, as these will include extra drawings not included in mine.
while i was looking into buying "scone" couple years ago, i spotted a book written about scone the title was something like "dismantling and re-rigging a Thames barge"
other than that you should visit websites for Irene, keewayden, prilrm although these are all coastal boats their owners are "realists" and are hands on type of people.
if i can be of any further assistance don't hesitate to contact me.
regards

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

This project puts our febble fitting out problems in perspective! Are there ways to register the boat so work and materials would be vat free, like a foundation,or charityor set up a business, the enormity worries me,having seen boats like the Cambia fall on hard times.

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

I must have had a thick moment, I forgot that the hull no engaved on a beam means she's pt 1 , sorry , it's on my first entry

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Thanks for all that , and if you feel you can help in any other way , don't resist the urge, even if it means a quick flight with toolkit in hand /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, cheers

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

I must admit that I hadn't even thought of that , more things to think about , anyone got a spare head

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Sorry , sad git on the forum at 03-00 , can someone tell me where there is a boatyard that is willing to help out please . I have been asked to lodge £10,000-00 , just to put her in dry dock . Just to put her in dry dock . That kind of money will see heaps of work done , but they want me to lodge it in a bank , so they have access in case I do a runner , is this the first kick in the head followed by more , probably , sorry YES , but I'm not giving up , can we make this a forum project , I don't mean all pile in but , sorry this early in the stage to get such a kick in the teeth , any help would be appreciated , I don't suppose kieth and YBW have anything to offer . Whatever happens , she will sail again, got confirmation from previous skippers grand daughter who is in posession of all diarys etc , please excuse spelling , I'm knackered

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Dave,
do you intend laying her up around the Crouch/Southend area? If so, I could let you have a couple of numbers of helpful people to find a home. Got to bear in mind that a lot of people start these things round here, and then the yard is left with trying to dispose of the fall out when they lose heart, so I can see the upfront money, but I am not sure about 10 grand.

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Dave, are you totally mad?

I hope so, because this is a tremendous project and I am really looking forward to watching the progress.

Maybe he was reminding you that you may need to build a wood steamer to bend planks!!

Good luck with the project.

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

Have you thought you may be better off buying an acre somewhere adjacent to a creek? Doesn't have to be deep water for a Thames barge - just enough to float her at springs. I'll bet you're also going to need a couple of old shipping containers on site. Just done a few mental calcs and ten grand could get you an acre of agric. and a purpose built slip; there's the planning issue, of course, but I'll bet if the place is reasonably isolated you could get away with it for a few years ... or even claim 'Persevere' as an agricultural building. Flog the land to pay for the final fit-out.

Re: Project Persevere 82 Ft of wooden craft work

What is the fastest time you could repair below the waterline? I had always discounted using a commercial yard due to cost until I saw a privately owned fishing boat up on Eel Pie Slipways last week. He seemingly comes up every 2 years. It's expensive whatever way you look at it but you have more options once the bottom is done.
