I had three faults with my new tillerpilot. Cruisermart at Burnham-on-Crouch exchanged it for a new one and this one has some faults too. Am I just unlucky?
I bought mine at the 2000 Boat Show (when they were still badged as Navico) from Marine Electronic Services Ltd, but I've only been using it in earnest this season and it's hopeless. It will steer the boat well enough for a while then unpredictably wander off and go into a series of widening oscillations till I have to knock it off and steer manually. I've tried adjusting the gain (no joy) and re-calibrating the compass using the motoring round in a circle technique described in the manual - it doesn't respond to this either. Trouble is it's out of guarantee even though hardly used.
Jim, I my first one had problems 1, 2 and 3 below. The replacement one has problem 1 and 4 but I have yet to evaluate the new one for problems 2 and 3:
1) the instruction book says that to enter the "calibration" mode I should hold the "tack" button and press the "cal" button. With the TP10 that I have just by pressing the "cal" button results in the TP10 entering the Calibration function. As the "cal" button is right next to the "STBY AUTO" button it is most frustrating when you accidentally press the "cal" button by mistake, which is easily done in a moving boat.
2) the automatic sea-state appears not to work. After pressing the "STBY AUTO" button the TP10, although it maintains a course, the ram constantly shunts back and forth. My old Navico tillerpilot would do this and after a minute or so would settle down, but not the new TP10.
3) if the boat goes off course the TP10 sometimes seems to wait too long before taking any action. This often results in the boat going off course by at least 10 degrees before the TP10 takes any action. This happens particularly when sailing, which is when a 10 degree deviation can be very significant. My old Navico autopilot did not suffer from this problem.
4) a liquid is weeping out of the slots in the underside of the housing.
While I am waiting for Simrad to reply to me about the 2 faults with the second unit I thought I would see if anyone else was having similar problems. It appears your problems are different, but also very anoying!!
