If Carlsberg built a marina I am sure they would market it as "Probably, the best marina in the world".

So what would make the best marina in the world if you were giving them a few ideas and in real life where is the best marina you have visited.

Best Marina visited

Karpaz Gate Marina, Northern Cyprus (www.karpazbay.com) is one of the best so far...we are about 3/4ths complete on our circumnavigation.

BTW, Penang, Malaysia was one of the worst. When we tied up the dockmaster asked us if we were aware of all of the problems there with potential damages.

For being great shelter in a lovely spot, then Korcula Town or Concarneau would be high on my list.

For facilities then Concarneau probably had the most revolting night loos I've ever encountered, so for launderette, showers, shelter, restaurants and access to a nice town then I'd go for one of the big concrete carparks, perhaps La Rochelle or Pornic in Brittany.

Worst, Doarnenez by a mile. I'd rather scuttle the boat than ever enter that harbour again.

Could someone translate this for me...I am serious and not being assholy.

When did Marina Lanzarote open, or are you referring to Puerto Calero Marina?

Please specify and can you say any more?

Bill

Sure, Puerto Calero is a marina on the south side of Lanzarote.

We lived aboard there for 2 years, even got a cheapo car! Easy for airport, shops.

Low cost of living, had a great social life, met loadsa nice people.

Very good staff, friendly and helpful.

Could go on but you get the idea! Ask away if you got questions.

Cheers, CS

Amazing how experiences can differ. We had an 'OK' time in Douarnenez and it certainly was no-where near the worst marina we've ever experienced. The loo's were clean and it wasn't a long walk into town. We had a nice time looking round the maritime museum.

Judging by the visitors' book many people rate my marina, Locmiquélic, as the best on the west coast of France. Certainly I'm very happy there because in addition to having brand new facilities, the staff are really welcoming.

Best in the world? I would be interested in seeing the one at Dubai.

The worst by a long shot: Toulon, though they may have renewed since I was last there. Best in the Med that I have visited. Porto Cervo but re-mortgage the house first.

Pete, Thanks for the reply, but if it is clear to you, then you cannot translate it for me. I had someone else read it and they were not sure either.

Bill

Sorry if I've confused you, I've reread my post and I'm not sure of the problem.

I can try saying it another way:

Marinas in a lovely location and good shelter:
Korcula Town
Concarneau

Marinas with best facilities and good shelter, but not pretty:
Pornic
La Rochelle

Worst, most dishonest, rolly, dirty pointless marina and town:
Doarnenez

(oh, and to the poster who likes Doarnenez, fair play to you, harbours can often be very different indeed depending on recent changes of management, which way the swell is coming in, and even whether you arrive needing fuel and a warm shower on an unexpected (to you ) national holiday)

I doubt one that puts up signs like this in the "facilities" would figure much in this category:D

I didn't say I liked it that much - but I did say we had an OK times there are and I can think of worse places.

The whole 'worst marina' thing has to be measured against what you mean by worst. Worst berths/price/location/showers/facilities/distance to shops/experience last time you visited or what?

It sounds like you had a bad time at Doarnenez. We had an OK time and the berths and facilities were OK so I struggle to understand 'worst and would never go back again...'.

Went there once and had a bad time as a whole load of things were wrong about the place
1) Needed fuel and almanac said they had a fuel berth. It had a sign saying, "Ouvert tous les jours, 24/7" It was shut for the 2 weekdays we were there.
2) Harbour guy keen on his money and selling us shower tokens but shrugged about fuel berth.
3) Showers and loos really filthy with excrement dried on by time, or possibly frozen on.
4) Shower tokens produced a good long flow of cold water, moments of boiling then cold again when committed to the shower
5) Town by and large shut, apart from the only unfriendly restaurant I've come across in Brittany
6) Swell rolling the boat in the berth all day and night threatening to take cleats out, clash rigging, and generally lead to all sorts of Heath Robinson contraptions from all boats to reduce the movement, so no sleep
7) Bad guinness
8) Complete loss of abilty to give benefit of the doubt, second chance, sense of proportion, or anything but a goodbye and never again
