Princess 35 informations needed

Hi Nick,

Just wondering how much smoke your ford diesels produce on start up.

1. A little smokey
2. Quite a lot of smoke
3. Lots of thick smoke
4.marina is covered in smoke. Lol.

I'm thinking of going to look at a boat with ford Lehman 120hp engines in Holland.

Tia.

120 Lehman is naturally aspirated so it wo t smoke anything like a turbo version. .

Thanks Paul. I've had a few thousand hours behind the smaller 4 cylinder Ford 80hp tractor which was quite smokey on start up for the first 5 mins, but once it warmed up it wasn't too bad. Max continuous revs were 2200, but we used to plough all day long at about 2100.

What was socially acceptable back in the 80's re emmisions is now probably beyond the pale, and I wouldn't feel comfortable covering a Med marina in a layer of smoke on every start.

One of the best value used boats out there.
Look for signs of corrosion around engine mounts, front and rear, indicating leakage on the sw cooling side from pump, coolers or shaft gland pipe work.
Make sure the anodes have continuity between them, otherwise you may find corroded components.
If you find somewhere that will replace or replicate the bathing platform wooden inserts, please let me know.
Thanks.

Later models had those teak inserts and both mine are well beyond help.
Did get a quote or two and the replies would have doubled the value of the boat.
Going to get a couple of sections of GRP lattice or grid aka Flowgrate and cut to shape with grinder.
Its available in light gray or beige approx 20mm thick, fits flush, with impressive non slip surface, should blend in nicely and never ever need any maintenaince.
More commonly seen on pontoon walkways.

Thanks for that.
The inserts have an awkward curve to them on our Princess. Well at least it would be awkward to us to replicate in most material. Might be hard to get right ?

Yup those curves and that funny offset shape will be a challenge.
One teak infill actually disappeared last summer, leaving a gaping hole, adjacent boat owners take great delight in pointing this out to me at every opportunity. Its on my to-do list !
Am going to do cardboard pattern which actually fits before taking grinder anywhere near this job.
New sheet capable of producing 2 x grids about £120.00. Off cut from Ebay about £30.00 but silly money courier.....sigh.

While on the P35,recently had to sort out the bog exit pipe which involved removing about 6 metres of pipe from the bowels :) of the boat.
When it leaves the toilet it vanishes into the bilges and reappears at the valve via an enormous loop past the chain locker under the front bedroom !!!.

I may be quite wrong and HLB will certainly know better, but I thought some early Princess 35 had 165hp volvos? Probably a bit light weight.

Correct, some early versions had 165hp volvos. Most common seems to be 200hp volvos (TAMD41A and then 41B). 200hp Fords were also fitted, and best of the bunch i thought were the 250hp cummins.

Some even had single engine and shaft.
There was one of those on the Thames sans fly bridge.
Other engines included Mans or might have been Duetz(in Germany of course) and Ivecos.
Also advertised was a P35 re-engined with pair of the super fragile KADS for some mysterious reason.
The original test boat used by MotorBoat and Yachting in December 1986, fitted with pair of Ford Mermaids producing 200 HP each achieved 24 knots max with average owner junk aboard,
Claimed fuel was 1.23 mpg at WOT. the Volvo engined example managed 24.6 knots.
Price 67.000 + VAT.

The report takes Princess to task on shite stainless steel screws already rusting, hinges falling off and carpet edges not bound .
It did suggest the 165 HP was not really up to the job.
