Cleaning through the fuel system in a First 305 with a VP2002 there is a pre-filter that is similar to the usual CAV water separator but has no filter element but a metal cone in the upper part. This cone is marked as 'sediment filter'. Is this normal? How does it work? Thanks for any help or advice.

If you have a sediment filter (which you do), you should then have at least one "proper" filter before or on the engine. The sediment filter does exactly what it says on the tin (or cone in this case :)). It will filter sediment and, very usefully, it will also filter asphaltines. Make sure you keep it clean.

Thanks Paul - yes there is a 'proper' filter on the engine as well. I had never come across a sediment filter in a boat before.
