I caught a glimpse of river cottage Hugh whittinswhatshiname prawn netting in Weymouth but the volume was off and I didn't catch any details. Looks like good fun. Anyone know what is involved? Is it a seasonal thing?

Thanks.

I've never netted prawns but we used to regularly go out push netting for shrimps. You just need chest waders, a push net, which is a thing like a very heavily built landing net, a riddle to sort out the big ones and a bucket. If you make a riddle that lets all but the biggest fall through then you save a lot of shelling. Catching them is easy, shelling them is what takes the time and it takes as long to shell a small one as a big one!

1st July to the end of Sept, best to go at low water around spring tides.

in a good spot just a half hour will be enough to catch a good feed

Wine goes down well whilst picking them out :)

I reckon it was shelling prawns that gave me an allergy to the things - shame, because I love them, but can't eat them. A biologist colleague reckoned it'd got the haemolymph into a cut on my fingers, causing my body to develop antibodies to it. He was the same - reckoned it was from sorting the contents of sample nets! And I was OK until a memorable night on Svalbard, eating a tray of freshly caught Arctic prawns from the first fishing boat of the season in Longyearbyen.
