Practical ideas and what used ....

My wife and I are thinking about converting a 'square' green garden parasol to fit the cockpit.
Secure a pole holder in the cockpit sole and have 4 guyss lines - one at each corner out to bacstays / cabin top.

Previously I bought a small folding camping table for 9.99 in local Hypermarket and it fits the cockpit a treat .....

Betaware do a Golf Trolley Umbrella holder for fitting to the golf cart frame .... fits stern rail fine for fishing rod .....

We did something similar and bought a very cheap garden umbrella from a French supermarket. We ended up putting the pole into one of the two self-draining holes in the back end of the cockpit. A couple of bits of rope to the pole kept it reasonably attached to the pushpit. Another straying bit of rope attached from pole to side guardrail allowed us to tilt it as the sun moved. Dealing with a moving sun was the main bit which had to work

Didn't work late in the evening, or if there was a wind, and was aesthetically pleasing only if you liked your cockpit being covered by a big "Orangina" logo. We used it for years

pal of mine is thinking to buy a boat and will spend about 900 notes on his Bimini to fit .......

Guinness Beer umbrella should be a lot cheaper and more akin to activity under it !!!!

Have done this on three boats now and everywhere we go people take one look and go scurrying off to buy their own.
You dont really need a foot holder...a good rubber cup on the end of the pole will do if the guy lines pull down and the pole will effectively be forced onto the deck and stay there.

I'm now the proud owner of an anchor light that switches itself on at dusk and goes off at dawn.

Got 2 for £6.99 from a Spar shop in Arisaig.

Better known as these irritating solar powered garden accessory lights.

....and yes, it does give enough illumination in a dark anchorage....

The commercially available.....

.."Anchorshade" is nothing more than what you have described. Except, that is, that your set-up is probably a little more rainproof and resistant to sparks from the barbecue than the Anchorshade.

Get a fishing rod bag to keep it in (again like the Anchorshade)and you're really in business!

ps anyone want a slightly used Anchorshade?

Beware...... If it's for UK use as soon as you have sorted it out the sun will go in.

Yup It was this time last year we saw that rather hot spell, and ever since the sun decided it was'nt going to come out until last month. great idea though.

Anybody got any good ideas for holding mugs, glasses, cans to the steering pedastal without buying the whitlock attachment.

Yes. A bicycle water bottle holder held on with cable ties if you don't want to drill the casting.

With a little bending it can hold a wine bottle too. (I have one on my Daeoo Shuttle shore bike!)

slice a 5 or 10cm diameter pvc drain pipe in a few cm high sections, glue them to a piece of wood and there you go

I think that\'s very sad......

..that you had to spend your childhood holidays in a Spar Shop.

At least I got to go to Gt Yarmouth or Bournemouth .

The weight being the biggest issue for me.

and

You'll be glad to know that the village hasn't changed that much. Yes the shop is now a 'Spar' and there a re a couple of new builds, but surprisingly there hasn't been that much change since I first went in the 70's.

Main change is a European funded pontoon for the Eigg/Rum ferry.

Mobile phone holders ..... the universal sort with either sprung sides or the bendable wrap-around arms ...... they hold just about anything in their size !! I use one for my HH GPS, my mobile phone, HH VHF etc.
