Re: Ellen on TV - Post Mortem

Seemed to me like a pretty decent effort from over 25 hours of material which EllenMac recorded.

What I thought demonstrated her driven nature most was this: she was fine surviving technical problems, out-running 80 knot winds and falling off waves not knowing if a capsize was imminent. When she really fell apart (and said she screamed to the heavens) was in the South Atlantic when the boat was not able to sail effectively because of the weather patterns. Then she didn't sleep because of danger, but because the boat wasn't performing in the way she wanted -or needed. Interesting.

My take on the hype and exposure is this:
-I still see and hear about World Cup 1966 and its team, so 3 weeks of EllenMac seems nothing to me
-Adulation for EllenMac is nowhere; see Beckham-magazine.com, or celebswelove.com etc etc etc for massive and ridiculous worship of (imo) people with dodgier credentials
-99.9% of sailors are understated, mud-loving low-key folk that delight in their love of the water and boats, not unconditional achievement of sequential goals, so they might well not approve of the 0.1%
-I don't know, but I reckon Ellen probably loathes the level of attention she has to put up with.

B&Q Castorama does have 2 tillers...it was that strange orange contraption you saw.

Re: Pacemaker

Good programme, well balanced, I couldn't do it and admire her greatly.

HOWEVER, I found myself wondering about the previous record holder. Ellen had a constant challenge all the way round where she was 1 day ahead, then 3 days behind Mr Rolyon(?). That must make it relatively easier to speed up a bit than where he was (say) 50 days ahead of the previous record. Very tempting to ease up on the throttle in that situation, yet he kept going. Has he got a story?

I, too, noticed that all the shots came from Starboard. Will French TV have the same programme with shots from the Port side?

Ellen vs Jamie - who\'s the whinger?

Excellent stuff. For 8pm prime-time TV I thought it was spot on.

By the way Jim_H, Kingfisher owns both B&Q and Castorama and is a British company, so I expect they would have wanted the B&Q side of the boat used in all the UK publicitity and Castorama in France. Kingfisher directly sponsored her Vendee Globe boat but felt that as they are not a consumer 'brand' subsequent efforts would be better off branded in the colours of the companies they own.

Finally, great TV juxtapositioning with the new Jamie Oliver series starting on Ch4 straight after the Ellen programme. If you wanted to see swearing, whinging and toys thrown out of the pram big style, Mr Oliver provided all that in spades, making Ellen seem like a complete saint for the way she coped under pressure...

Re: rubbish

Im'e with Brian all the way, Ellen is a gutsy lass, very tough, we both had the same instructor Capt David King (formally Hull Marina) never met her but I do rate Davids sailing abiity very calm I learnt very quickly from him, with Ellen sailing is in her blood from birth....her tearfull moment is her release valve, we all have one when we get tired and stressed and they all work in diffrent ways. If I owned B&Q and laid out loadsa money for a big sailling thingy I would want TV coverage more sales at the till gives more profit for more sails on the water...i'ts economics..........anyway everyone can call names complain..... let's see you do it!!!!!or B&Q it !!!!!!!!! I think Iv'e been watching too much telly...

Brendan, I did watch it through
Sorry to be pedantic but you started it.
Scream-"sharp piercing cry" or "a high-pitched noise resembling a human cry"
Shout- "a loud utterance; often in protest or opposition"
Sad I know but there's nothing on telly

Scream, shout, howl... what's the difference in reality? She let loose. You mentioned shouting and swearing. What she said she did is not much different from that

That's true.

The French have the right idea, to keep a nation healthy the middle and upper classes need to be culled every very 200 years.

Re: Ellen on TV - Post Mortem

I enjoyed the program but felt there was too much Ellen and not enough about sailing the boat and the boat itself. Not blaming Ellen, but it is typical of our current obsession with ‘personality’.

Huge pressure on her to beat the record which you have to give her credit for, particularly as she was in a goldfish bowl the whole of the trip.

I felt she let herself down a bit near the end (very unBritish) when her lead was being chipped away. Is winning everything in life ? Paula Radcliffe syndrome or are women just more honest than men ?

She has been a great inspiration to us all - god bless her !

I agree... This is the problem with the Media, in that once someone achieves something they have to adopt a "Super Personality" status.

What intersts me about Ellen in reading her books, and following her progress on teamellen.com was the fact she was a Simple person, with simple needs and a passion for the sport. She is not funny, not trying to be funny; infact there is nothing forced or over-familiar about her personality at all.

Compare with Beckhams.... in your face, in the spotlight etc etc ... now there are people I find justification in whinging about....
