Re: Ellen on TV - Post Mortem

Thought it was a far better program than got aired on ITV a couple of days after her return.

Always liked Helen - great respect for what she did. Still think she didn't come out of it as well as she could have. It must be me, but I came away with two impressions: 1. She was on the phone a lot. 2. She cried a lot.
Not having achieved what she has, I can only imagine what it must have been like.

What really surprised me, was the reaction of Mrs Yanita: after about 40 mins -> "For God's sake, stop blubbing woman!"
Married for 15 years now & she still surprises me.

If any Lady deserved the title Dame , Ellen certainly fits the bill. I am totally in awe of her and her fantastic achievment, and really so very modest too. Definately not just a case of setting the auto pilot as somebody suggested in an earlier post . How fitting she beat the French in Trafalgar anniversary year too ! I bet Nelson's up there smiling somewhere !

It would be a wonderful idea, but keep the numpties off the Q&A or I'll flame them live. Kim can set up a moderated forum for this sort of thing, as has been done for RYA etc in past.

Re: Ellen on TV - Post Mortem

Would Mrs Yanita cope with climbing mast to sort runners in less than ideal conditions. If so, she can comment without regret. If not, suggest we take her a few miles out to sea out of sight of land, then ask same question. She might suprise you again, and run up pole like a monkey and sort problem. More likely she will burst into tears at such thoughtless behaviour from yourself. <g]

By the way, I really hope for your sake you get your wifes name correct!

On a slightly more practical note... I did not notice anything that looked like a stering control on the boat.. Does this mean that all the steering was handled by the autopilot or was there some manual rudder control somewhere that I didn't notice ??

Also the 2 handled winch directly behind the cabin that she spent a lot of time on.. I assume that this was the mainsheet control ?? Is this a correct assumption ??

I know that there is at least one tiller. You can see it in some of the shots. Painted luminous orange.

There may be a second as I'm sure when she left on the run the tiller was luminous green. So the orange was either a second one or a replacement.

rubbish

what's going on here? I remeber no carping about johnny wilkinson, nor about lots of other achievers. In any case, Ellen is one of very few serious sportspeople i can recall who have been lampooned on national tv, and yet her public persona continues to be managed fairly badly: fighting back the tears whilst in the middle of the attempt is one thing, but it also seems to happen during the interviews afterwards?

Proper PR/image manager should have got rid of the constant head shots, and concentrated at least some questions away from ellens innermost feelings and towards the mechanics of the voyage, towards those others she said on many occassions were the backbone of the attempt. We have this sort of thing with racing car teams, so that as well as arg ooer from the driver, the dispassionate view of the support team is no less important as to what is happening. I mean, the weather people got things wrong here and there, so what about them - did she set off in perfect or less than perfect conditions? What's that relationship like between forecasters and ellen? Any camera work of the other end of the phone? Not even a bit?

We had no real detail of the equipment, no running commentary from the support team during the voyage which might have balanced things up - or were they in pieces as well?

Mainly, journos just lazily point a camera at ellen and let her ramble on. She seems to agree to this format too readily, and she herself is well able to set up the camera when "stuff happens" and press the "record" button, then fight back the tears. In fact, she's even more remarkably better at this than anyone else, including artic/antarctic explorers who come back missing a finger or two.

Beating the record was great, no question. Putting out quick tv programs is about the pr/money and this could have been done better. Lots better.

Re: rubbish

the point is, that most of the public will relate far more to the emotional than to the mechanics. You and others here are in a minority in that point. The vast majority of the public watching her don't sail, so her PR crew have done quite a decent job.

I assume you refuse to vote in general elections on the basis that you do not have personal experience of running the country?

Re: Ellen on TV - Post Mortem

Good program, nice ocean sailing shots and I have nothing but admiration for Ellen and her team for raising the money, planning it and doing it.

I do, however, feel manipulated.....

All of the images of "B & Q" which I have seen on TV, Press or the internet have shown the STARBOARD side of an Orange/White boat called B&Q. last night there were two brief shots of the PORT side of a Blue/White boat called CASTORAMA.

All of the media coverage coverage in this country has been focused on a British attempt on the record.

Can any of the forumites resident in France describe the french coverage and confirm the colour of B&Q / CASTORAMA as seen in the french media ??

Maybe it's just me being middleaged and grumpy but, I really resent the media manipulation and spin doctoring which passes for news these days. It has become almost impossible to discover the truth or even any hard facts about anything and I, for one, have become very cynical and negative about it all.

I think it was actually a bilge pump which she had to use frequently to pump all her tears out of the bilge /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

(Don't panic worshippers, I think she is neat too).

Good program.

Have to admire anyone who knowing puts themselves through that kind of tough experience.

I though she came across as being very self-aware (in a good way) and well-grounded (or should that be well sea'ed?).
Another thing that really came across was her passion and love for being out there.

Well done Ellen

Re: rubbish

disagaree i wanted the dumbed down version - that WAS the dumbed -down version! I wanted the intelligent analysis version, that showed what went into the design of the boat, planning, mission control, rather than what we had - an edited string of her tapes with a bit of effusive and usual emotional "thanks to all the team, really, no really" talking head from ellen.

The background stuff on vendee globe frexample - incisive, and from less emotionally involved people with a bit more brain about what will work and what won't.

Okay, fair enough we can have soie emotional stuff - but what about mission control. Do they say "ooer this is acvtually a bit serious" or perhaps "oh yeah, she does that, not to worry" - the emotional stuff just played bosh out of context, no idea really how much sleep she may or may not have had and so on, and not overlaid with any other insider views either.

So, in conclusion, telly programs made by fatipa would obviously be rubish, whereas mine would drone on for hours and hours in painful and minute detail including all the screwups with hidden cameras of people picking their nose, and (especially) a confrontational interview with the the nerk who compared the boat displacement and mast height with various b+q products, plus the other camera bit of ellen being perfectly ok, looking at her watch and thinking oops better do some filming, secretlly chopping up an onion and then getting the camera ready...

Re: rubbish

Agree, what I find hard to believe is that with all the mick taking from her last episode, they repeat the same format, no surprises then if she gets lampooned again.

My point is that they would have lots of footage to choose from but persistently showed her moaning about fatigue. My kids were saying "she chose to do it, why is she moaning?"

Good PR would have eliminated this and focused on the positives.
