Mine works great for navtex messages, but I never managed to get anything else out of it.
But I must admit that I never invested a lot of time on its manual since I bought my current boat, where it was installed by the previous owner.
I also would be interested in other views on this equipment.
BTW, I guess that the navtex board was originally an option on the 207. Does yours have it?
The mass of cables and kit needed to receive weatherfax by laptop must be seen to be believed, so a dedicated unit at the right price must be worth it. I never had one myself but a friend does and it always worked well. The advantage for you is that Furuno are very helpful and will almost certainly assist in getting it running if you have problems. Let me know if you decide to give up - I will buy it from you.
I guess that the NAVTEX, not the FAX is the optional you're talking about.
If so, you have good reason to be pleased - this feature alone is worth having the unit onboard IMHO.
Regarding the aerial, the unit on my boat has its own one, with the RF amplifier.
The SSB radio has its own separate wiring and aerial. This way, everything work nicely.
I was told that this type of wiring is required whenever the SSB radio is mandatory as a safety equipment, but I can't tell you how well any other type of installation might work.
