Poss problems with garmin plotter?

Wonder if you could shed some light on this?


We have a helm mounted garmin 5012 plotter.

It has a cover and is protected by a further canvas cover.

However this week I turned it all on and changed the SD card over to make sure our new SD chart was working.

It didn't register the card first time, although removing it and reinserting fixed the problem.

Yesterday I turned the plotter on again and the card didn't register. Again removing it and reinserting get fixed it.

Could there be a fault with the card Reader? Or is there something I'm missing here? Moisture perhaps?

It's a big bugger of a unit and I am loathed to have to ship it back to garmin. However, if needs must.

In the first instance I'd phone Garmin. They're usually very helpful. Do other cards read ok? Can you narrow the problem down to card or reader?
 
As per Keith-i I would check if it reads other cards first (I can probably send you one of my old map cards to check if you don't have one - just PM me) if it works fine and in the same conditions as yours (left in the plotter overnight say) then its your card. If not, then a call to Garmin who are very good on support. Also, perhaps make sure you have the latest software update. I have a 4010 btw. Assume you didn't get an error message, like "card locked" or read error flash up.

It glitched 2 years ago once as we can into alderney.

Since then it has worked flawlessly. It has caused the same problem With 2 different cards, so it seems to be the plotter.
The software was updated a year ago, and I can see no significant updates since.

I will call garmin in the morning

I had the same problem with the card reader on my 6 month old GPSMAP 551. Garmin is sadly no longer synonymous with either quality or customer service. In my case the new card was inserted in my home when I unpacked the unit. After 2 months the card reader began to work intermittently. Garmin are insistent I have allowed grit or moisture into the reader, though it has only been opened once, indoors. After a number of issues with different devices I would not buy the brand again.
 
I contacted garmin this morning.

In a nutshell, they have a fixed service cost to look at the unit...... £474,plus vat and carriage.

I guess I'll try the pencil rubber :)
